No current personal net-worth figure for Belfast businessman Michael Arthur Herbert has been verified. The latest dated estimate located is €83 million for 2018, reported by the Irish Independent in its 2019 Rich List profile. It is a historical media estimate, not a current valuation.
Which Michael Herbert is this?
This is Michael Arthur Herbert, the Belfast businessman associated with Herbel Restaurants—not another person with the same name. Companies House lists him as an active director of Herbel Restaurants Limited, appointed on 9 December 1980, and identifies his place of residence as Northern Ireland. The filing gives his birth month and year as May 1957. Companies House
What net-worth estimates have been reported?
The figures below are media estimates, not audited statements of Herbert’s personal assets and liabilities. They refer to different years, use different currencies, and do not all describe an individual estimate.
| Reference year | Reported estimate | Publisher and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Around 2007 | Close to £190 million | The Irish News reported this as an earlier estimate in 2014. The Irish News |
| 2013 | £75 million | The Irish News reported this in 2014 as a joint estimate for Herbert and his wife, not an individual figure. The Irish News |
| 2015 | €70 million | The Irish Independent 2016 Rich List. The Irish Independent |
| 2016 | €72 million | The Irish Independent 2017 Rich List. The Irish Independent |
| 2018 | €83 million | The Irish Independent 2019 Rich List profile; the latest dated estimate located. The Irish Independent |
The sequence documents estimates attached to particular years; it does not establish Herbert’s wealth today or justify projecting a current figure from older estimates.

Why business figures do not establish personal net worth
Franchise and property income
Coverage has associated Herbert’s wealth with Herbel Restaurants’ KFC franchise, property holdings and development, and a Häagen-Dazs franchise. The Irish News reported Herbel KFC trading income of £27.15 million and rental income of £1.62 million for the year ending in 2012. It also reported an investment-property portfolio of £25.8 million in accounts it described as being from the prior year. These are company income and property figures—not Herbert’s personal income or net worth. The Irish News
Company ownership and accounts
The Irish Times reported in 2016 that Lesley Herbert was the controlling shareholder of the Herbel group. It also noted that the group’s accounts did not provide a complete picture of the wider franchise group’s finances. Company accounts therefore cannot, on their own, show what an individual owns after accounting for ownership shares, liabilities, and other personal assets or debts. The Irish Times

The Abbey Centre acquisition
Experian’s H1 2025 Northern Ireland MarketIQ report says Herbert Corporate Holdings, led by Michael Herbert, acquired the owner of Newtownabbey’s Abbey Centre from NewRiver REIT for £59 million. That is the reported price of a corporate acquisition, not a valuation of Herbert’s personal wealth. Experian, H1 2025 Northern Ireland MarketIQ report
