1998: They meet at the Deauville Film Festival
Douglas and Zeta-Jones first met in August 1998 at the Deauville Film Festival in France, according to Us Weekly’s timeline and Biography.com. Us Weekly reports that mutual friends Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith introduced them.
Early courtship: Douglas’s retrospective account
Douglas later recalled an awkwardly bold opening: after about half an hour, he told Zeta-Jones, “You know, I’m going to be the father of your children.” Us Weekly attributes the story to his 2016 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show and reports that he sent flowers and an apology after she ended the conversation.
In 2026 coverage of his memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas described Zeta-Jones asking for monogamy if their relationship was to continue. “What Catherine said is, if we’re going to continue this then I want it to be monogamous,” he recalled, as quoted by Vanity Fair. Douglas said he then called the women he had been seeing to end those relationships. The Associated Press reported his account that he had been dating five women in different cities. These are Douglas’s later recollections of private events.

Douglas proposed at his home in Aspen on New Year’s Eve in December 1999, according to Us Weekly’s timeline.
August 2000: Dylan is born
Their son Dylan was born in August 2000, before his parents’ wedding, according to Biography.com and Us Weekly.

November 18, 2000: Wedding
Douglas and Zeta-Jones married on November 18, 2000. Biography.com gives that date; Us Weekly places the wedding at New York’s Plaza Hotel in November 2000.
2003: Their daughter Carys is born
Their daughter Carys was born in April 2003, according to Biography.com and Us Weekly. Dylan and Carys are the couple’s two children.

August 2013: They announce time apart
On August 28, 2013, a spokeswoman for Zeta-Jones said the couple “are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage,” CBS News reported at the time. The report described them as having been married nearly 13 years and said no divorce filing or legal separation had been reported. The public statement described time apart to work on the marriage—not a divorce.
CBS News also noted Douglas’s 2010 cancer diagnosis and Zeta-Jones’s bipolar II disorder. The report did not establish either as a cause of the couple’s decision, so they should not be treated as an explanation for it.

2014–2015: Reconciliation and Douglas’s public comments
Us Weekly’s timeline reports that the couple reconciled in April 2014, after an eight-month separation. In June 2015, Douglas told ABC News that they were doing “better than ever” and called the separation a “little bump in the road.” He also reflected on how his cancer experience had changed his appreciation of marriage and family. Those were his comments at that time, not a guarantee of how the relationship would be described in later years.
