Michael Crichton’s net worth is often estimated at $200 million at the time of his death in 2008. That figure, published by Celebrity Net Worth, is an estimate—not a verified estate inventory or audited accounting. Publicly available reporting cited here does not establish the total value of his assets and liabilities at death or the estate’s value today.
What was Michael Crichton’s net worth?
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Crichton’s net worth at $200 million when he died in 2008. The figure is widely repeated, but no public primary estate accounting has been located to verify it. It should therefore be understood as a secondary estimate, not a court-established valuation.

Net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities. It is not the same as annual income, earnings during a particular period, gross revenue from a film or television franchise, or the value of an estate at a later date. Those distinctions matter because the reported figures about Crichton describe different things.
What the reported career figures do—and do not—show
| Reported figure | What it measures | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $200 million | Estimated net worth at death | Celebrity Net Worth; a secondary estimate, not verified by a public estate accounting. Celebrity Net Worth’s Michael Crichton profile. |
| $20 million to $100 million | Estimated annual income | Range reported in a 2008 BMJ obituary; it is not a net-worth figure. BMJ obituary. |
| $65 million | Historical earnings figure | Forbes figure reported by The Guardian in 1999; The Guardian said Forbes had placed Crichton seventh among the richest entertainers the previous year. It is not an estimate of his total wealth at death. The Guardian, 1999. |
The figures cannot be combined or averaged: they refer to different measures and dates. The available reporting offers career context, not a complete accounting of Crichton’s wealth.

Why Crichton’s work generated substantial income
Crichton’s career crossed books, film, and television. He wrote The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park, among other books, and created the television series ER, according to the BMJ obituary. The obituary also reported that more than 150 million copies of his books had been published in 36 languages. That is the obituary’s publishing figure, not a current sales audit.
These achievements help explain why estimates of his wealth attract attention, but book circulation, screen success, and franchise revenue do not by themselves establish an author’s net worth. Contracts, expenses, taxes, liabilities, and the timing and ownership of rights all affect what an individual ultimately owns.

What is known about Crichton’s estate?
A 2009 TMZ report said other assets remained in the John Michael Crichton Living Trust. The report does not give the trust’s total value, and it is not a complete estate account. The available sources do not establish a reliable current value for the trust or the family’s estate.
Celebrity Net Worth also makes claims about posthumous royalties and estate earnings, but those totals are not independently substantiated here by primary documentation. They should not be treated as confirmed figures.
