Orchestra usually refers to the main floor; the mezzanine is elevated behind or above it. Your view and experience depend on the theatre’s layout, the exact seat, the production, access needs and the price. A centered mezzanine seat may suit you better than a far-back, side or overhung orchestra seat—but check the specific venue rather than relying on section names.
What changes between orchestra and mezzanine?
Orchestra seats put you on the main floor, generally closer to the stage. Mezzanine seats are elevated, often behind or above the orchestra. That difference can mean a closer, more immersive perspective from the orchestra or a broader view of the stage from above. Neither result is guaranteed: distance, angle, height and the theatre’s architecture all matter.
Venue terminology also varies. Some theatres use names such as balcony, loge or dress circle for distinct areas, and they are not interchangeable everywhere. Santa Fe Opera describes the Crosby Theatre as having two levels—a main floor and a mezzanine also known as a balcony. That is the venue’s own naming, not a definition that applies to every theatre. For a more complex layout, San Diego Civic Theatre lists sections including both a Dress Circle and a Mezzanine, along with different access routes. Read the theatre’s own map and section descriptions before comparing tickets. San Diego Civic Theatre seating information

How to compare the actual seats
View, angle and obstructions
Check whether the seat is centered or off to one side, whether the listing notes a partial view, and whether an overhang affects the sightline. An overhang’s position is specific to the room: at Santa Fe Opera’s Crosby Theatre, it begins above Orchestra Row W. Do not assume the same row or condition applies at another venue. If the theatre offers seat-level images, use them. The Eugene O’Neill Theatre, for example, provides an interactive 360-degree view from a selected seat. A venue tool can help you judge a particular location more usefully than the broad label “Orchestra” or “Mezzanine.” Eugene O’Neill Theatre seating and venue information

Distance and perspective
Choose the orchestra if being near the stage is a priority, but do not assume every orchestra seat is close or has a straight-on view. Choose the mezzanine if you prefer an elevated perspective that may show more of the stage at once. The effect depends on the auditorium and the seat, so compare positions on the official map and use any available view tool.
For a production that uses the full depth or height of the stage, sightline can matter as much as closeness. There is no universal show-by-show rule: consider the staging and any production-specific seat-view information the venue provides.

Access and stairs
Section labels do not tell you whether a seat is accessible or how difficult it is to reach. Check the venue’s official accessibility details for step-free routes, elevators, wheelchair locations and transfer seating. If the listing does not answer a question relevant to your needs, contact the venue before buying.
The differences can be substantial. The Eugene O’Neill Theatre says its mezzanine is up 25 steps from the Orchestra, with another 15 steps to the remainder of the mezzanine, and lists accessible seating in the Orchestra only. Price
Compare the current prices for the exact seats you are considering, including any fees shown by the seller. The section name alone does not establish which is less expensive. South Coast Repertory describes Orchestra as the main floor closest to the stage and Mezzanine as above and behind it; it also identifies Orchestra as one of the premium price sections at its Julianne Argyros Stage. That is a local pricing detail, not a general rule for theatres. South Coast Repertory seating charts

A practical way to choose
- Start with the venue’s official seating map. Confirm what its Orchestra and Mezzanine labels mean and locate the specific seats.
- Check the view. Look for partial-view notes, side angles and overhangs; open a seat-view tool if the theatre offers one.
- Match the seat to your priorities. Decide whether closeness, an elevated perspective, a centered angle or a particular view of the whole stage matters most to you.
- Confirm access. Review stairs, elevators and accessible seating details, then contact the venue if anything important remains unclear.
- Compare the actual total price. Assess the seats you can buy now rather than assuming one section is always cheaper or better value.
- Consider the production. If the staging makes a particular sightline important, use official production or seat-view information when available.
Buy through the venue or an authorized ticket seller, and recheck the seat map and access information for the specific theatre and performance.
