From a resourceful kid defending his house to a lonely businessman shown what life means to the people around him, Christmas movies endure because their characters give the season its mischief, warmth and meaning. This is a curated, subjective selection—not a measured popularity ranking—spanning comedy, fantasy, animation and drama. The list distinguishes film versions where that matters.
25 memorable characters from Christmas movies
The picks below reflect each character’s role in the story, the choices that shape its holiday plot, and the character’s staying power across repeat viewing. Those are editorial criteria, not audience-poll results. For films with multiple adaptations, the entry identifies the version being discussed.

Kevin McCallister — Home Alone (1990)
Eight-year-old Kevin is accidentally left behind in suburban Chicago while his family travels to France. He turns the empty house into a series of traps to defend it from burglars Harry and Marv. -
Old Man Marley — Home Alone (1990)
Kevin’s mysterious neighbor becomes more than a source of childhood fear. The American Film Institute says director Chris Columbus added Marley as a serious counterweight to the comedy, helping Kevin learn about forgiveness and family. That quiet emotional turn gives Marley a lasting place in the film.

-
Marv Merchants — Home Alone (1990)
Daniel Stern’s Marv is Harry’s hapless partner. His physical comedy turns the burglars’ repeated attempts to enter the house into a memorable counterpoint to Kevin’s ingenuity.

Catherine O’Hara plays Kevin’s mother, who realizes he has been left behind and races to get home to him. Her frantic journey gives the slapstick a parallel story of parental worry and determination.

Jack Skellington — The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
The Pumpkin King of Halloween Town becomes fascinated by Christmas and tries to make the holiday his own. Jack’s earnest but misguided reinvention gives this stop-motion fantasy its distinctive collision of spooky spectacle and seasonal wonder.
-
Scott Calvin — The Santa Clause (1994)
After an extraordinary Christmas Eve encounter, Scott finds himself taking on Santa’s job. Tim Allen’s everyman performance turns a supernatural premise into a comedy about family, responsibility and an unexpectedly literal change of identity.
-
Santa Claus — Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Whether he is Kris Kringle or simply a department-store Santa depends on whom you ask—and that uncertainty is the point. Edmund Gwenn’s performance makes the character’s warmth persuasive enough to drive the original film’s courtroom debate.
Why these characters last
The strongest holiday-film characters do more than decorate a seasonal setting. Kevin’s cleverness and Marley’s compassion pull Home Alone between slapstick and reconciliation. The Grinch and Cindy Lou Who make a change of heart the story’s central action. George Bailey’s crisis turns a Christmas film into a drama about community and the unseen value of an ordinary life.

The selection also spans the 1946 It’s a Wonderful Life, the 1947 Miracle on 34th Street, the 1980s family comedies, and later fantasy and animation.
Films and versions to know
Some titles here have been adapted more than once. The Kris Kringle, Fred Gailey, Doris Walker and Susan Walker entries refer to the original Miracle on 34th Street; the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who entries refer specifically to the 2000 live-action film. The Muppet Christmas Carol is the 1992 adaptation featuring Michael Caine and the Muppets. Naming the version matters: the same familiar story can have different performers, tones and characterizations.
