The shared idea is length plus movement; the label does not specify an exact layer map or require a particular wave pattern.
Face-framing pieces may be part of the cut, but their length and prominence can vary. Latest-Hairstyles’ gallery, updated April 23, 2026, presents the look as long hair with added layers for volume and a beach-inspired, wavy appearance. The wave is a styling choice, not a requirement of the haircut.
What to ask for at the salon
Describe the result you want rather than relying on the trend name alone. Bring reference photos that show both the overall length and the kind of layering you like, then discuss where the shortest layer should sit. - Say how much length you want to keep, including whether you are comfortable losing length at the front.
- Ask for long, blended layers and explain whether you want noticeable face-framing or a subtler shape.
- Point out where you want the shortest layer to fall, using a photo or a clear landmark such as your chin, shoulders, or collarbone.
- Discuss how your density and natural texture affect the result, and how much styling you are willing to do.
A useful way to start is: “I want to keep my length but add soft movement. Can we choose a shortest layer and face-framing shape that work with my texture?” A stylist can then tailor the placement instead of treating “mermaid” as a precise technical instruction.
Who may like the cut—and what to consider
The cut may suit people who want to keep long hair while adding shape and movement. Stylist coverage says it can be adjusted for different face shapes and textures; natural waves and loose curls can make the layers especially visible. That does not guarantee the same result for everyone: hair density, texture, current length, and how much length you want to retain all affect the shape.

Latest-Hairstyles calls the look trending in its gallery updated April 23, 2026. In a 2026 red-carpet trend report, Who What Wear quotes celebrity hairstylist Malcolm Marquez predicting more interest in mermaid hair during spring and summer. That is a stylist’s forecast, not a statistic documenting search volume, salon requests, or adoption.
