Tesla disputed that sequence: a spokesperson said the wheel was torn off when the car hit a tree. The reporting available here does not establish which happened first or prove that a defect caused the crash.
What Massoud alleged happened
TMZ reported on May 31, 2019, that Massoud had sued Tesla over a crash involving his Model 3. According to the complaint as described in the report, Massoud said the right front wheel crumpled and detached as he changed lanes on Hollywood Boulevard. The car then left the sidewalk and struck a tree. TMZ reported that he bought the car in September 2018. TMZ’s May 31 report also said the lawsuit alleged personal injuries and a totaled car.
The Center for Auto Safety later characterized the alleged failure as a suspension defect. Its June 5, 2019 account said the complaint claimed Massoud’s insurer, Geico, had found Tesla responsible. That is an allegation relayed through the complaint, not an independently available Geico finding established by the reporting. The Center for Auto Safety’s article is an advocacy organization’s account, so its characterization should not be treated as an independent technical determination.
What Tesla said
The Center for Auto Safety quoted a Tesla spokesperson as saying the “wheel was torn off because the driver crashed into a tree at high speed.” That account reverses the alleged order of events: rather than a wheel failure causing the collision, it says the collision caused the wheel to separate. The quoted response appeared in the June 5 article.

TMZ had reported on May 31 that Tesla had not responded to its request for comment by the time that article was published. The later quoted response came from a subsequent report; these accounts refer to different publication times, not necessarily conflicting records of the same outreach.
Did the wheel come off before or after impact?
The available reports do not resolve the sequence. TN’s June 1, 2019 coverage explicitly noted that it was unclear whether the wheel detached before impact or as a consequence of the collision. TN’s report describes the complaint’s account of an accident in Los Angeles on September 20, 2018, but does not establish the cause.
