That distinction explains why accounts may describe her as having either three or four children.
How are Melanie Griffith’s children related to her?
| Name | Parentage | Relationship to Griffith |
|---|---|---|
| Jesse Johnson | Don Johnson and Patti D’Arbanville | Stepson; Griffith helped raise him and includes him in her family, according to recent secondary reporting. |
| Alexander Bauer | Melanie Griffith and Steven Bauer | Biological son |
| Dakota Johnson | Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson | Biological daughter |
| Stella Banderas | Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas | Biological daughter |
Jesse is the reason some descriptions count four people in Griffith’s family while others list only her three biological children. He is Don Johnson’s son with Patti D’Arbanville, not Griffith’s biological child. Good Morning America’s 2024 account identifies his parentage; a 2026 KidsCo family profile describes Griffith as having helped raise and include him.
Who are the four children in the family?
Jesse Johnson
Jesse is the son of Don Johnson and Patti D’Arbanville. Griffith became his stepmother through her marriage to Don Johnson and, according to recent secondary reporting, helped raise him and treats him as part of her family. The available reporting does not establish legal or custody details, and it does not provide a verified direct statement from Griffith explaining her own use of the relationship.
Alexander Bauer
Alexander is Griffith’s son with actor Steven Bauer. He is one of her three biological children.

Why do accounts give different totals?
The totals use different definitions. A count of biological children gives three: Alexander, Dakota and Stella. A broader account of the family can include Jesse, Griffith’s stepson, whom she helped raise. TIME’s 2017 profile described Griffith raising Alexander, Stella and Dakota; later family coverage also names Jesse while identifying his parents as Don Johnson and Patti D’Arbanville.
What has Griffith said about motherhood?
In an interview with Porter quoted by TIME, Griffith said, “I was a totally functioning mom.” She also said, “I didn’t do some things I probably should have done but, mostly, I was there for my kids.” These remarks describe her account of motherhood generally; they are not a specific explanation of her relationship with Jesse.

What is known about Griffith and Banderas after their separation?
In an August 2026 El País report, Banderas described his relationship with Griffith as sincere both when they were together and after they separated. He said, “La cuestión es que, cuando éramos pareja y cuando nos separamos, siempre fuimos muy sinceros” (“The point is that, when we were a couple and when we separated, we were always very sincere”). This is Banderas’s description of his relationship with Griffith, not a claim about every relationship in the blended family.
