Amazon reportedly paid $40 million for rights to Melania and spent about $35 million marketing it, according to the Associated Press. Those are separate figures, not evidence that $75 million went to Melania Trump. Director Brett Ratner defended her role by saying she arranged the deal as a private individual, while lawmakers questioned whether the transaction involved pay-to-play. The available reporting does not establish that bribery occurred—or provide a complete accounting of the deal’s returns.
What the reported price tag includes
The Associated Press reported that Amazon paid $40 million for rights to Melania, a documentary about Melania Trump directed by Brett Ratner, and spent approximately $35 million on marketing. The rights price and marketing expenditure are distinct amounts; the report does not establish that the combined $75 million was paid to Melania Trump or that it was the film’s production budget. Associated Press
A separate figure has also circulated: Variety reported that Donald Trump disclosed a $10.71 million licensing fee connected to the documentary in a 2025 financial disclosure. That filing figure is not the same measure as Amazon’s reported $40 million rights payment. Variety
These numbers should not be added or substituted for one another as if they describe a single payment. Rights acquisition, marketing spend, licensing fees and theatrical gross are different measures. The reporting available here does not provide an audited account of the film’s total revenues, streaming value, final profit or loss.

What Brett Ratner said in defense of the deal
In a CNN transcript dated January 30, 2026, Ratner, identified as the film’s director, said: “She put this deal together as a private individual, and she’s not an elected official.” His defense focused on Melania Trump’s status when arranging the deal. It does not by itself establish the transaction’s legality, explain how the price was set or resolve questions about possible conflicts of interest. CNN
The precise claim that the creators said the price “wasn’t bribery” is not verified by the cited statements. Ratner’s quoted remarks are narrower: he described Melania Trump as a private individual rather than an elected official.

Why lawmakers raised pay-to-play concerns
Senators Elizabeth Warren and Hank Johnson raised concerns about possible corrupt pay-to-play and asked Amazon to explain the transaction. Their press release records an allegation and request for information, not a legal finding that bribery or corruption took place. Senate press release
That distinction matters: a large commercial deal involving a politically prominent family can prompt scrutiny without proving a crime. The cited material does not establish that Amazon’s acquisition was bribery, nor does it settle the lawmakers’ questions.

How Amazon and Jeff Bezos defended the acquisition
The Guardian reported that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos described the acquisition as a “good business decision,” denied personal involvement in it and rejected bribery accusations on Amazon’s behalf. The paper also reported that he characterized the film as having cultural and historical relevance. Those are the company’s and Bezos’s stated rationale, not an independently verified assessment of the film’s financial performance. The Guardian

- Rights price: AP reported $40 million for rights; this is not the marketing figure or a verified payment to Melania Trump.
- Marketing: AP reported about $35 million in marketing expenditure, separate from the rights price.
- Licensing disclosure: Variety reported a separate $10.71 million licensing fee disclosed by Donald Trump in a 2025 financial disclosure.
- Deal outcome: The cited reporting does not establish a final profit or loss, a complete return on investment, or an audited accounting of theatrical and streaming value.
So the reported scale helps explain why the acquisition attracted attention, but it cannot answer by itself whether the deal was commercially successful, politically motivated or illegal. The sourced defenses and criticism are competing statements about the transaction; they do not amount to a legal determination.
