Mel Gibson’s sequel to The Passion of the Christ is now a two-part film project titled The Resurrection of the Christ. As of October 4, 2026, Part One is scheduled for May 6, 2027, and Part Two for May 25, 2028. Jaakko Ohtonen plays Christ, and the films follow the Resurrection and its aftermath.
What has changed about the sequel?
Gibson initially developed the follow-up as a single film, but has said the Resurrection story was difficult to contain in one movie. The project is now split into Part One and Part Two. CBN reports that the two-film format is intended to give the story broader context.
The title is The Resurrection of the Christ. The script draws on the four Gospels, Acts, letters attributed to Peter and Paul, and writings by other Christian historical figures, according to CBN. Gibson has described his aim as an account faithful to Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions; that is his stated creative approach, not an independent assessment of the films’ theology.
When are the films scheduled to come out?
