Yes. Mel Gibson’s Malibu home was destroyed in the January 2025 Palisades Fire. Gibson was in Austin recording an interview with Joe Rogan when the fire reached his neighborhood. The Washington Post reported that his wife, Rosalind Ross, their son, Lars, and the family’s chickens were safe.
Did Mel Gibson lose his Malibu home in the L.A. fires?
Yes. The Los Angeles Times reported that Gibson’s Malibu home was reduced to “nothing,” and the Associated Press later reported that his publicist, Alan Nierob, confirmed it was “completely gone.” The reports concern the Palisades Fire, one of the fires in the January 2025 Los Angeles-area disaster, rather than a single blaze encompassing all of the fires.
Gibson was in Austin, Texas, recording an interview with Joe Rogan when the fire broke out. He told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times, that he felt uneasy during the podcast because he knew his neighborhood was burning. “When I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there,” he said. The Times published its report on Jan. 9, 2025, and updated it Jan. 13.
Did Mel Gibson’s chickens survive the fire?
According to the Washington Post’s Jan. 9, 2025, report, Gibson said his chickens were safe. The same report said his wife, Rosalind Ross, and their son, Lars, reached safety. The Post included the chickens in its account of the family’s safety.

The accounts describe different kinds of evidence: Gibson’s remarks explain what the loss meant to him, his publicist confirmed the home was gone, and official figures describe damage across the broader fire area. They should not be treated as interchangeable.
