For director C. Premkumar, Meiyazhagan brings together two ways of seeing ourselves: Arulmozhi reflects people as they are, while Meiyazhagan represents the kindness they might aspire to. In a November 2024 interview with Scroll.in, Premkumar explained how that contrast, the characters’ conversations, and the memory of a lost home shaped the film.
Why does Meiyazhagan resonate?
Premkumar’s answer begins with the difference between the film’s two central characters. “If Arulmozhi represents all of us, Meiyazhagan represents what we can aspire to be,” he told Scroll.in. Arulmozhi, in this reading, is recognizable in his ordinary anxieties and reactions. Meiyazhagan is an ideal of generosity: not a flawless abstraction, but a person shaped by the director’s encounters with people who put others first.
Premkumar recalled an uncle who would go to weddings and help with chores, even when doing so meant using paid leave. That kind of self-effacing care informed his idea of Meiyazhagan. The character’s appeal, as the director describes it, comes from seeing a humane quality that exists in real people and imagining it as a way to live.
How the story grew from a short story
In Premkumar’s account, the film began during the pandemic, when he was writing a survival drama. He pitched the idea for a proposed anthology, and filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan responded positively. Premkumar then developed it as a feature. He said the story started as a short story, grew into a novel, and eventually became a film after actor Vijay Sethupathi suggested that he make it for the screen.

Conversation, not a formula
Premkumar sees the characters’ exchanges as the engine of the screenplay: “It is all about the characters and their conversations. As the conversations evolve, the story evolves.” That is a description of where he places the film’s dramatic movement, not a claim that the film has no structure.
He said he learned technical filmmaking in college but was unconvinced by conventional screenwriting rules as a practical formula. “I was taught the three-act structure, but I don’t know how it works,” he said. His emphasis is instead on following what the characters say and how their relationship changes as they talk.

What the Thanjavur house means
The family house in Thanjavur matters partly because Arulmozhi has lost it. Premkumar wanted the house to feel rare, and linked that choice to his own experience of living in many homes. In the interview, he described homes as tied to changes in circumstances, experiences, and ideas: different places can hold memories of different stages of a life.
That connection helps explain how a place can remain emotionally present even when it is not constantly shown. The house is more than a setting; it stands for a past that Arulmozhi can remember but cannot simply return to.
Why some scenes were cut from the theatrical version
Premkumar said about 18 minutes were removed after the film’s length drew criticism. Among the cut material were conversations about the jallikattu ban and the 2018 Thoothukudi police firing. He recalled divided opinions about these dialogue-heavy scenes, and said review pressure and the importance of first-week box office collections to the producer affected the decision to edit. He also regarded the discussions as socially relevant to Tamilians.

Scroll.in reported on November 17, 2024, that Meiyazhagan had found renewed attention on Netflix. Premkumar welcomed the response, but called it bittersweet: “All of this love is a little bittersweet because had this response come during the theatrical release, things would have been different.” That is his reflection on the timing of the reception, not a measure of audience numbers. The 2024 report does not establish whether the film is currently available on Netflix in any particular country.
