Why did Biden’s DNC speech start so late?
Biden delivered the closing address on the first night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Fox News Digital reported that the speech was scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET, but the program ran long; Axios also reported that Biden began close to 11:30 p.m. ET and spoke past midnight. The address came after Biden withdrew from the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, making it a farewell and a transition moment for the party.
A DNC spokesperson told Fox News Digital that applause repeatedly interrupted speakers. The spokesperson said organizers skipped program elements to reach Biden sooner, adding that the convention was proud of the atmosphere in the hall and of its effort to showcase the coalition behind the Harris-Walz ticket. That is the DNC’s stated explanation for the timing, not an independently established account of why the program ran late.

Fox News Digital reported that McCain, the former co-host of The View, posted on X that she was stopping her viewing because she could not stay awake. The outlet quoted her as writing, “I’m tapping out – I can’t stay up this late, we all have lives and kids.”

McCain also criticized the decision to have Biden speak so late, describing it as disrespectful to him. Fox News Digital reproduced her post with a censored expletive; the outlet’s account does not establish the uncensored wording, and the original X posts were not independently verified here. Her criticism was about the late hour and its treatment of Biden, while the DNC spokesperson attributed the delay to applause and said the program had been shortened.
