Prince Harry and Meghan visited Nigeria from May 10 to 12, 2024, at the invitation of Nigerian military leadership. The three-day trip focused on the Invictus Games, mental health, education and cultural activities. Nigeria’s interest in hosting a future Games was discussed, but the visit did not confirm that it had been awarded hosting rights.
Why did Harry and Meghan visit Nigeria?
The visit was announced on April 28, 2024, by Nigerian defense spokesperson Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau. The invitation came from Nigerian military leadership, and the announced purpose was to discuss the Invictus Games and take part in cultural activities. The Invictus Games is an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.
At the time of the announcement, officials described strengthening Nigeria’s place in the Games and the possibility of hosting a future edition. That was an aspiration, not a confirmed selection. The Associated Press’s April 28 announcement report did not say Nigeria had been awarded a Games.
When did the visit take place?
The couple arrived on May 10 for a three-day visit that concluded on May 12. The announcement in April had said the visit would take place in May but had not specified an arrival date. AP reported their arrival and first-day activities on May 10.

The reports established that Nigeria wanted to strengthen its involvement and explore the possibility of hosting in a future year. They did not establish that Nigeria won hosting rights, received an award or had a Games scheduled. The visit’s stated discussions and the country’s hosting aspiration should not be confused with a confirmed decision.
