Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were absent from King Charles III’s Trooping the Colour on June 15, 2024. PEOPLE reported on June 4 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had not been invited for the second year in a row. The Royal Family’s official account confirms the parade and its participants, but does not explain the couple’s absence.
Why did Meghan Markle and Prince Harry miss the 2024 Trooping the Colour?
According to PEOPLE’s June 4, 2024 report, the couple were not invited. PEOPLE said it was the second consecutive year they had not received an invitation. That is a media report about their invitation status, not an explanation issued by Buckingham Palace; the official event account does not give a reason for their absence.
The report does not establish a motive, so claims that the decision reflected a particular family dispute or other cause go beyond what these accounts confirm.
When was King Charles III’s second Trooping the Colour?
The parade took place in London on June 15, 2024. It was Charles III’s second Trooping as sovereign; his first was held in 2023. The Royal Family describes the event as the annual parade marking the monarch’s official birthday.

What happens at Trooping the Colour?
The Colour is a regimental flag carried through the ranks during the ceremony. In 2024, Number 9 Company of the Irish Guards had the honour of trooping its Colour. The Royal Family’s official report described the parade as involving more than a thousand Household Division soldiers and hundreds of military working horses. It also called the King’s Birthday Parade a “gift” from the British Army’s Household Division to the King.
That account records the day’s pageantry: King Charles and Queen Camilla travelled by coach, the Princess of Wales travelled with her children, and several senior royals attended on horseback. It confirms who took part in the public event, but does not address the Sussexes’ invitations.

Why is Trooping the Colour held in June?
Trooping marks the sovereign’s official birthday, which is separate from the monarch’s actual birthday. The tradition of a summer celebration developed because a public birthday parade was more practical in better weather. Historic Royal Palaces says Edward VII standardised summer birthday observances in June, Elizabeth II moved the parade to the second Saturday in June in 1959, and Charles III kept the June schedule. The UK Government explains that the ceremony is believed to date to Charles II’s reign and was designated to mark the sovereign’s official birthday in 1748.

PEOPLE reported that Harry and Meghan attended together in 2018 and 2019. The large family gathering did not take place in the same form in 2020 and 2021, when the event was scaled down during the COVID-19 pandemic. They attended the 2022 Trooping as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, but were not on the Buckingham Palace balcony with working royals. PEOPLE reported they were not invited in 2023, Charles III’s first Trooping as king; Us Weekly also identifies the 2022 parade as their last appearance at the ceremony before 2024.
