What happens to Megan and Amy at the end?
Josh forces Amy into a large barrel. Inside, she finds Megan’s decaying corpse. Josh takes the barrel into a forest, digs a hole and buries both girls together. Amy is alive and begging from inside as he covers the barrel.
The final images do not show anyone finding the girls. Missing posters underline that they remain unaccounted for in the story. The film does not establish a later escape, recovery or police resolution.
Is Megan found alive?
No. The body Amy discovers in the barrel is Megan’s, and the ending presents her as dead. There is no later scene suggesting she survived.

What happens to Amy after she is buried?
Amy is alive when Josh buries the barrel. The film cuts off without showing whether she survives, escapes or is found. A 2026 ending guide interprets the unresolved aftermath as suggesting Josh was never found; that is an interpretation of the ending, not an event confirmed on screen. Read the ending guide.
Is Megan Is Missing based on a true story?
The film’s found-footage presentation is fictionalized; Common Sense Media says the events did not actually happen as shown. Writer-director Michael Goi has said he drew details from real cases. Together, those accounts mean the story borrows from real-world cases and concerns, but the sources do not identify Megan and Amy’s story as a single real case. What did Michael Goi say the film was about?
Goi said reports about abducted children and internet predators stirred “Rage. Frustration. Sorrow. And more emotions that are too complex to describe. Those were the feelings that collided in me, and prompted me to make Megan Is Missing.” He also described his aim as: “I wanted to make a movie about the subject of internet predators and abducted children.” These are statements of intent, not evidence that the film is a factual record or a proven safety intervention. Goi said the script drew on seven cases: five involving abducted and murdered children and two involving internet predators. He also said he based dialogue on real online chats by 13- and 14-year-old girls who were friends’ children, and that filming took eight and a half days.
