The look pairs a bob silhouette and fringe with soft movement and an intentionally undone finish. The detailed cutting and styling advice Glamour shares, however, comes from New York City hairstylist Dan Williams—not Giannetos.
What makes Megan Fox’s haircut a cowgirl bob?
There is no single technical formula for a cowgirl bob. Across descriptions in Glamour, NewBeauty and Vogue, the shared features are a bob-length shape, fringe, some movement and a deliberately relaxed finish. Exact length, layering and bang shape can vary.
Williams describes the cut as “a longer twist on the ‘French Bob,’ with chic piecey bangs and a blunt-full length.” His description suggests a fuller outline with mild texturizing at the ends, rather than heavily chopped layers. NewBeauty’s interviewed stylists likewise describe soft, blended layers for movement, while Vogue notes a straight bob base, slight layering at the bottom inch and long curtain bangs. These are variations, not contradictory rules.
How to ask your stylist for the look
Bring reference pictures that show the haircut on hair with a texture and density similar to yours. Then discuss the details that distinguish one version from another:

- Length and outline: Decide whether you want a shorter chin-grazing bob or a longer shape, potentially closer to the shoulders, and whether you prefer a fuller, mostly one-length outline.
- Layers: Ask for subtle movement and clarify whether you want softly blended layers or minimal end texturizing. NewBeauty’s Michelle Hong says the layers should be blended rather than choppy.
- Fringe: Choose between piecey, wispy or curtain-like bangs. Discuss the fringe in relation to your hair density and the look you want.
- Finish and cutting approach: Explain whether you want a polished bob or a more lived-in result. Hong recommends a dry or razor cut for an effortless finish; ask your stylist whether that approach suits your hair and the shape you want.
NewBeauty’s TerraRose Puncerelli recommends consulting with your stylist to align expectations. A consultation is especially useful when your reference photo has a different texture, length or fringe from your own hair.
How the cut may work with different hair textures
NewBeauty’s Hong says loose curls and waves can bring out movement in the layers, while thicker hair may benefit from layers that remove bulk. She also notes that people with dense hair may prefer a wispy fringe. These are stylist observations, not guarantees that one version will suit everyone. Your stylist can adjust the length, layering and bangs for your hair and preferences.

How to style a cowgirl bob
For a tousled finish, Williams suggests using a 1-inch curling iron and twisting the hair as the curl releases. Leave the ends out to emphasize texture and create a small kick at the tips. Use heat protectant with hot tools; a texture spray is an optional finishing step, not a requirement of the cut.

How it differs from nearby bob styles
Because “cowgirl bob” is used for several related variations, compare the haircut you want by its actual features rather than relying on the label alone:
- Versus a French bob: Glamour frames the cowgirl bob as a longer twist, with a fuller length and piecey fringe.
- Versus a shag: Talk through how much layering you want and where it should sit. The cowgirl-bob descriptions range from a mostly one-length shape with lightly textured ends to subtle blended layers; they do not establish one fixed shag comparison.
- Versus a blunt bob: The outline can remain full, but the ends may be lightly texturized and the finish intentionally less polished.
In the salon, length, layering, fringe and the amount of daily styling you are comfortable with are more useful distinctions than treating these style names as strict categories.
