The 2016 Comix Creatrix: 100 Women Making Comics exhibition featured three Indian artists: Manjula Padmanabhan, Kaveri Gopalakrishnan and Reshu Singh. Amruta Patil, a prominent Indian graphic novelist, was not among them. The distinction reflects a deliberately limited exhibition, not a judgment that Patil’s work was unimportant.
What was the global 100 list?
Comix Creatrix: 100 Women Making Comics was an exhibition at London’s House of Illustration, open from 5 February to 15 May 2016. Co-curated by Paul Gravett and Olivia Ahmad, it brought together 100 women cartoonists from around the world. Its scope ranged widely across humour, horror, superheroes, autobiography, erotica, history, surrealism, reportage and science fiction.
India’s three representatives were Padmanabhan, Gopalakrishnan and Singh. The exhibition was a selection of work, rather than a definitive ranking of comic artists.
Who were the three Indian artists?
Manjula Padmanabhan: a newspaper-strip pioneer
Padmanabhan was among the pioneers of English-language comics in India. From 1982 to 1986, her strip Double Talk ran in the Sunday Observer; she was the first woman to run a newspaper strip there. Its protagonist, Suki, acquired cult status, and Penguin Books India later published the Suki stories.

Why wasn’t Amruta Patil included?
Patil was described as India’s most well-known woman comics artist, but the exhibition had room for 100 creators from across the world. Co-curator Paul Gravett acknowledged the limits of that format: “With any exhibition, especially one limited to only 100 when as you know there are thousands of women making comics, past and present, worldwide, there will always be people and works left out.”
Gravett also explained that the curators wanted to include autobiographical pages by Singh and Gopalakrishnan from Drawing The Line. The anthology grew out of a workshop held in the wake of the Nirbhaya rape. Their inclusion highlighted work connected to that project; it does not establish that Patil was considered and rejected for a particular artistic or political reason.

What did Amruta Patil make?
Kari: a long-form graphic narrative
Patil’s path-breaking Kari is a long-form graphic narrative characterized as India’s first long-form graphic narrative with a lesbian theme. Its format and subject mark a different kind of contribution from a newspaper strip or a short anthology story.
Adi Parva: the beginning of a Mahabharata trilogy
Adi Parva is the first part of Patil’s Mahabharata trilogy. Patil described it as the beginning of her relationship with paint and painters, and named influences including Odilon Redon, Paul Gauguin, Amrita Sher-Gil, folk art from the Indian subcontinent and Mexico, and fashion-magazine pages used for collage. She also identified the jewel box as an important motif.
