They were sent to Earth by the Celestials to protect humanity from the Deviants, but each has a distinct power and relationship with the people they have watched over.
Who are the Eternals?
The Eternals are ancient, immortal beings who serve the Celestials. In the film’s premise, they came to Earth to defend humanity from the Deviants. Marvel producer Kevin Feige described the team as ten heroes who had “been here the whole time,” opening up a part of the MCU’s universe that audiences had not yet encountered. Disney’s overview of the film introduces the group and its premise.
The ten Eternals are not the only notable characters in the film. Dane Whitman, played by Kit Harington, appears in Disney’s cast listing, but he is not one of the ten members of the team.
Who are the 10 Eternals in the MCU?
Here is a spoiler-light guide to the team, their abilities, and the roles they occupy. The character descriptions come from D23’s Eternals character guide and Disney’s official film listing.

What are the Eternals’ powers?
The team’s abilities range from direct combat powers to healing, invention, and illusion. Their powers are not presented as a shared ranking: the official descriptions focus on what each Eternal can do, rather than offering a consistent measure of who is strongest.
- Changing matter: Sersi transmutes non-sentient matter she touches.
- Flight and energy attacks: Ikaris flies and fires cosmic energy from his eyes; Kingo projects cosmic energy from his hands.
- Healing: Ajak uses cosmic energy to heal Eternals, animals, and humans.
- Weapons and protection: Thena shapes cosmic energy into weapons, while Gilgamesh’s arms and fists are protected by a cosmic-energy-enhanced exoskeleton.
- Speed: Makkari is the team’s super-speedster.
- Technology: Phastos understands and communicates with machines, builds devices, and controls the Domo.
- Illusions: Sprite creates lifelike illusions and can make herself or others invisible.
The cited official material does not specify Druig’s ability, so a detailed power description for him cannot be established from these sources.

Who is the fastest Eternal?
Makkari is the Eternal identified as a super-speedster in D23’s character guide. That makes her the team member associated with super-speed; the official descriptions do not provide a comparative speed ranking or numerical measurement.
Is Makkari deaf?
Yes. Makkari is deaf and uses ASL. Disney News described Lauren Ridloff as the MCU’s first deaf superhero and reported that she helped create signs for the Eternals’ names. Disney News’ report from the film’s 2021 press conference includes that account.

What makes the characters different from one another?
The team’s contrast is not just about powers. Their different jobs, temperaments, and ties to humanity give the ensemble several ways into the story. Sersi’s empathy and everyday life as a museum curator offer one perspective; Ikaris’s conflict between duty and personal priorities offers another. Phastos is a maker and technopath, Ajak is the group’s spiritual leader, and Kingo has built a public identity as a Bollywood star.
Some characters also carry a more personal tension. Thena’s overwhelming memories shape how she is described, while Sprite’s appearance does not reflect her centuries of experience. Makkari’s deafness and use of ASL are part of her characterization, not a detail that changes her status as a superhero.

Gemma Chan described Sersi as a superhero whose powers are “not the most obvious or the flashiest,” emphasizing her empathy and affinity for humankind and Earth. That distinction captures the film’s broader range: not every hero’s contribution is measured by the most explosive power.
