The actor inside Imaginary’s frightening teddy bear Chauncey is Dane DiLiegro, a former professional basketball player whose screen roles have often put him beneath creature makeup or a full-body costume. In a March 9, 2024, interview with People, he described the heat and sweat of playing the bear during the film’s Louisiana shoot.
Who plays Chauncey Bear in Imaginary?
Dane DiLiegro plays Chauncey Bear, the cuddly teddy bear who becomes frightening in Imaginary. The film follows Louisiana woman Jessica, played by DeWanda Wise, and her young stepdaughter, played by Pyper Braun, after the child finds the bear.
The “handsome” contrast in the headline comes through in the interview’s anecdotes: DiLiegro recalled Wise greeting him with, “Oh, good thing we’re covering up that face of yours.” His co-star Betty Buckley also praised him, saying, “He’s such a great guy — and so handsome.”
What was it like inside the bear costume?
DiLiegro said the costume was not too heavy, but filming in Louisiana summer heat made it a sweaty job. He described taking a 15-minute break in his chair and returning to a large puddle of sweat around it. As he recalled the exchange: “I went to go sit in my chair for 15 minutes. And someone comes up, ‘Are you okay?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ They’re like, ‘Okay. Because there’s a huge pool of water around here,’”

He also said his weight could fluctuate by 15 pounds in a day while filming in such costumes. That was DiLiegro’s personal account of his experience, not a general measurement of costume work or an independently verified statistic.
How did DiLiegro move from basketball to monster roles?
A Massachusetts native, DiLiegro earned a Division I basketball scholarship to the University of New Hampshire. The People profile reports that he played professional basketball for eight years in Italy and Israel, including one summer with the Boston Celtics. He retired during the COVID-19 pandemic to focus on acting.

His path into screen work began with a stand-in job on Free Guy. DiLiegro said he initially hoped to host an unscripted culinary travel show, describing Anthony Bourdain as a hero. Instead, creature performances became a recurring part of his work. “Then playing monsters was kind of my thing, which I love and enjoy,” he said.
