PerthNow’s 2017 profile introduced Katrin Gray, known professionally as Mermaid Kat, as a professional mermaid and the woman behind Wanneroo Aquamotions Mermaid Kat Academy. It traced her move from Germany to Perth and her effort to make mermaid swimming a mix of skill, imagination and respect for the ocean.
Who is Perth’s Mermaid Kat?
Stephanie McKenna’s PerthNow profile, published 1 October 2017, follows Katrin Gray, professionally known as Mermaid Kat. Gray told the paper that she opened her first mermaid academy in Germany in 2012, then relocated to Perth in 2015. The story says the first group of aspiring mermaids in Western Australia began classes in 2016.
Gray described being underwater as “one of the most amazing experiences of my life.” The profile also connected her childhood interest in mermaids to Disney’s The Little Mermaid, while presenting the academy as a place to learn the practical skills behind swimming in a tail.
What did the academy teach?
The 2017 article describes lessons in mermaid safety, tricks and tail care. Gray told PerthNow that children should be good swimmers and could begin after completing swimming level six. That was her stated threshold for children in her program at the time, not a universal swimming standard or current eligibility rule for every course.

For current tail guidance, Mermaid Kat’s official FAQ says mermaid tails are not swimming devices. It recommends them only for experienced deep-water swimmers, with an experienced buddy or direct supervision. The FAQ explains that binding the legs can make self-rescue harder, recommends gradual training before open or deep water, and advises a minimum age of at least seven with adult supervision at all times. These are the subject’s recommendations, not a regulator’s rules.
How does Mermaid Kat connect mermaids with ocean conservation?
Gray’s point was not only that mermaid swimming looks magical. She told PerthNow she wanted to challenge the portrayal of mermaids as “bad, man-eating monsters” and described them as potential advocates for marine life: “Mermaids should be ocean ambassadors and role models, and educate other people about the importance of our underwater world.” The quote captures the conservation message at the center of the profile: the fantasy can be a way to draw attention to the real underwater world.

Mermaid Kat’s official website currently advertises courses in Perth and Germany, alongside professional mermaid tails and fins. Its current website also claims that more than 15,000 mermaids and mermen have trained; this is a self-reported figure with no publication date on the page.
A Perth provider, MerPeople, lists courses associated with Mermaid Kat Academy and SSI. The page describes an SSI course lasting six hours, a minimum age of 12, swimming and underwater-swimming prerequisites, a maximum of six participants, and a listed price of A$300 with tail rental. What to know before using a mermaid tail
A swimmable mermaid tail with a monofin is the relevant equipment for the activity, but owning one does not make it suitable for a novice or unsupervised swimmer. The tail restricts leg movement, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the current guidance of a qualified instructor; start in an appropriate supervised setting and do not take the equipment into open or deep water without meeting the experience and supervision conditions in the official FAQ.
