Justin Bieber’s parents are Patricia “Pattie” Mallette and Jeremy Bieber. They were never married, and Justin primarily grew up with his mother in Stratford, Ontario. Mallette supported his early interest in music, while Justin’s own comments about his father describe a relationship that was complicated but not wholly absent.
Who are Justin Bieber’s parents?
Justin Drew Bieber was born in Stratford, Ontario, on March 1, 1994. His mother is Patricia Mallette, commonly known as Pattie, and his father is Jeremy Bieber. Justin primarily lived with Mallette while growing up. Biography.com describes her as an author and producer, and reports that Jeremy has four younger children: Allie, Jazmyn, Jaxon, and Bay.
How Pattie Mallette supported Justin’s early music
Mallette encouraged Justin’s interest in music, entered him in local talent competitions, and helped post videos of his performances online. In a 2011 interview cited by ABC News in 2012, she explained that her original aim was simply to share a clip with relatives: “I put up a little video on YouTube for Grandma and some relatives to see.” Her account describes a parent sharing a child’s performance—not a deliberate plan to launch a career.

What Justin has said about his father
Justin’s comments resist the simple label of an absent father. In a November 2015 Billboard interview quoted by Biography.com, he said Jeremy “wasn’t in a place where he could raise a kid” when he was younger, while adding, “he has been in my life since.” Biography.com also reports Justin recalled that his father left for about a year when Justin was around four. That timing is Justin’s recollection as reported by the publication, rather than an independently established chronology.
How his relationships with his parents changed over time
Accounts of Justin’s closeness with each parent are snapshots from particular years, not a basis for claiming what his family relationships are like now. GQ’s February 2016 profile reported that Justin then felt closer to his father than his mother, while describing limited contact with both because of distance. Biography.com later reported that Justin and Mallette reconciled during a vacation in January 2018. These dated accounts show change over time; the sources cited here do not establish the family’s current private relationship status.

Pattie Mallette’s memoir
Mallette’s memoir, Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom, was co-authored with A.J. Gregory and published by Revell in 2012. In a Publishers Weekly interview published October 30, 2012, Mallette said Justin had read the manuscript before publication. She described what she hoped readers would take from it: “I really hope that they’re inspired and that they can find hope for some of their own dark situations.”
