Arun Vijay is a fictional 24-year-old Tamil film star in Sujatha’s Dream Factory, set in 1980s Kollywood. The novel introduces him as famous, vain and impatient with the people trying to reach him—but also, in later interpretations, as an insecure actor dissatisfied with his life and work.
Who is Arun Vijay in Dream Factory?
Arun Vijay, popularly known as AV, is one of the central characters in Sujatha’s novel. He is a fictional superstar whose face seems to be everywhere. He is not the real-life Tamil actor Arun Vijay; the shared name should not blur the distinction between a character and a person.

Dream Factory is Madhavan Narayanan’s English translation of Sujatha’s Tamil novel Kanavu Thozhirsalai. The HarperCollins Publishers edition is listed as a 2022 book with ISBN 9789354895364 and 353 pages. Its story is set in 1980s Kollywood and follows people working at different levels of the film industry, including lyricist hopeful Arumairajan, actress Manonmani and heroine Premalatha.
Why does the novel present him as arrogant?
The opening excerpt makes Arun’s celebrity visible in his everyday conduct. He wants to rest, but becomes receptive to an interview when he hears college girls will be there. A producer who has waited to discuss dates is brushed aside. When someone presses him, Arun snaps, “Get lost!” The line belongs to a fictional scene in Sujatha’s novel, translated by Madhavan Narayanan—not to a real actor.

These moments support calling Arun arrogant and dismissive in the excerpt. They show how fame shapes his priorities and how casually he treats people who need his attention.
Is there more to Arun than his public persona?
Yes. A 2022 review describes him as lonely and insecure, questioning the films he makes and struggling with desires he cannot resolve. That reading complicates the swagger of the opening scene: Arun’s status does not mean he is content. His vanity and impatience can sit alongside dissatisfaction and inner uncertainty.

Was Arun Vijay based on a real person?
Translator Madhavan Narayanan offered a qualified impression rather than a definitive answer. In a 2022 interview, he said, “My gut feeling is that the character had elements of Sujatha, Kamal Hasaan and Rajnikanth.” The spelling here follows the interview’s printed quote. Narayanan was describing his own sense of possible influences; this is not proof that Arun represents any one real person, nor a statement attributed to Sujatha.

Arun’s celebrity offers one entry point into a wider portrait of the film industry. Dream Factory places stars alongside people with less power and opportunity, showing a world shaped by unequal access, ambition and the work of getting a film made. The contrast between Arun’s ability to wave people away and other characters’ efforts to find a foothold helps frame the industry as a hierarchy, not just a parade of famous faces.
