Abdur Rahim Khan-e-Khanan (1556–1627), widely remembered as Rahim Das for his Hindi dohas, was also a Mughal commander, administrator, courtier, translator and arts patron. A Nizamuddin heritage initiative compares his poetry with that of Bhakti poets such as Surdas, Tulsidas and Kabir—but as a literary comparison, not a claim that their religious identities or historical roles were interchangeable.

Who was Rahim Das?

Rahim was the son of Bairam Khan, the influential Mughal regent who served Akbar. He went on to become a senior figure in Akbar’s court and administration, and continued serving under Jahangir. The Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative’s conservation proposal and the Metropolitan Museum of Art give his dates as 1556–1627.

His several roles belonged to the same courtly world: Rahim exercised military and administrative responsibilities while writing, translating and supporting the arts. Encyclopaedia Iranica describes him as a patron of poets, painters, calligraphers and bookbinders. That combination makes him more than a poet whose verses survived from the Mughal period; he was also a participant in the institutions and cultural life that helped circulate literature and illustrated books.

Why is Rahim compared with Bhakti poets?

Rahim is best remembered for Hindi or Hindavi dohas: compact couplets valued for their memorable phrasing and ethical or devotional insight. The Nizamuddin heritage initiative says his dohas draw on Hindu religious narratives and customs of veneration, and that he is often compared with Surdas, Tulsidas and Kabir. The comparison concerns themes and poetic expression. It does not establish that Rahim shared each poet’s religious identity, tradition or social position.

That distinction matters because “Bhakti poet” can sound like a definitive biographical label. The initiative’s wording is more measured: Rahim is “often compared” with those poets. It invites readers to consider the devotional language and stories in his verse without collapsing distinct lives and traditions into one category.

What languages did Rahim write and work in?

Hindi dohas are central to Rahim’s reputation, but they are only part of the literary range associated with him. Encyclopaedia Iranica says he composed in Persian, Turkish and Hindi and could translate between Arabic, Persian and Turkish. The Nizamuddin initiative also associates him with verse in Turkish, Arabic, Sanskrit and Persian, as well as prose works including books on astrology. These accounts describe different kinds of activity—composition, language scholarship and translation—so they should not be treated as interchangeable claims of authorship.

The initiative’s page mentions “700 Hindi couplets,” but does not provide a publication date or explain how the verses were counted. A precise total therefore depends on the edition and attribution method; it is safer to describe the dohas as a substantial and enduring part of his legacy than to present that figure as a settled count.

What did Rahim translate—and what did he patronize?

Encyclopaedia Iranica and the conservation proposal say Rahim translated the Baburnama from Turkish (Turki) into Persian at Akbar’s direction. The proposal characterizes this as the only surviving Persian translation among his translated works. That is a specific claim about the surviving translations described there, not a statement that every work associated with Rahim survives.

Rahim’s connection to another major translation project was different. A folio in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection, “The White Horse Got Stuck to a Rock in Mount Vindhyachal,” is dated 1616–17 and belongs to the Persian Razmnama, the Mahabharata in Persian. The Met identifies Rahim as the project’s patron. The record supports his role in commissioning or supporting the manuscript culture around the work; it does not identify him as its translator.

How do surviving objects make his legacy visible?

Museum and archive records preserve material traces of Rahim’s world as well as his literary reputation. The Met’s illustrated Razmnama folio documents the intersection of Persian translation, court patronage and painting. The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art catalogues a two-sided folio with a portrait of Abd al-Rahim Khan Khanan, Persian nasta’liq inscriptions and Persian verses on the reverse. The British Library catalogue also records a portrait of Rahim and notes his ministerial service under Akbar and Jahangir. These objects attest to visual and manuscript heritage associated with him; their catalogues do not, by themselves, prove that he wrote every text appearing on them.

Where is Rahim’s tomb, and what can visitors expect?

Rahim’s monumental tomb stands in Delhi along the historic Mughal Grand Trunk Road. The Nizamuddin conservation proposal says it was built for his wife and discusses its architectural relationship to Humayun’s Tomb and later traditions associated with the Taj Mahal. The tomb therefore links Rahim’s personal history to a broader story of Mughal architecture and memorial design.

The Nizamuddin initiative has documented cultural programming, research, publications, music and heritage walks connected with Rahim’s legacy. The cited material does not establish current opening hours or visitor arrangements, so check with the relevant site or heritage organization before planning a visit.

Where can you read more?

Celebrating Rahim, an illustrated scholarly volume, published by Mapin in 2017 in association with the InterGlobe Foundation and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, offers a fuller entry point than a short biography. The 272-page hardcover brings together essays on Rahim’s life, literary work across Persian and Hindi, popular dohas, lesser-known barvais, patronage and legacy. It also includes an accompanying music CD with performances of his verses. Its current availability is not established here.
