MediaMTX YouTube Stream Has No Audio: FFmpeg Troubleshooting

Find where sound disappears in a MediaMTX-to-YouTube pipeline: verify the source, FFmpeg stream mapping, MediaMTX tracks, output audio settings and YouTube health messages.

If a MediaMTX-to-YouTube stream has video but no sound, locate the first point where audio disappears: the original source, FFmpeg’s selected and encoded streams, MediaMTX’s path, or YouTube ingest. Check in that order before changing codecs or rewriting the command. A video track reaching YouTube does not prove FFmpeg selected or sent an audio track.

Trace the audio path from source to YouTube

Use evidence at each boundary: monitor or record the source, inspect FFmpeg’s detected and emitted streams, check the track arriving at MediaMTX, then read YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages. The earliest boundary where audio is absent is the one to fix.

1. Confirm the source actually has sound

Listen to the source before it enters FFmpeg, and confirm the intended input contains an audio stream. If the encoder preview or local archive is also silent, the fault is upstream of MediaMTX and YouTube. Check that the right audio/video sources are routed into the encoder, that audio is enabled in the source or encoder, and that the encoder reports no relevant errors. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive when stream quality is wrong: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.

2. Verify FFmpeg found and selected the intended audio

Read FFmpeg’s input and output diagnostics. Confirm an audio stream appears under the intended input and that the output includes the audio stream you expect. With multiple inputs, stream indices refer to the actual command’s inputs; do not assume that a working video selection also selects audio. Check any explicit -map options, audio-disable options, and codec options against the discovered streams.

MediaMTX documents FFmpeg as a publishing client and shows protocol-specific publishing patterns: MediaMTX: publish with FFmpeg. Its example ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream publishes a file to a local MediaMTX server. It is not a universal camera-to-MediaMTX-to-YouTube relay command: the input URL, mapping, encoding needs, destination, and stream key depend on your setup.

3. Check the audio format and stream count sent to YouTube

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. For 5.1 surround sound, YouTube specifies AAC over RTMP/RTMPS, with 48 kHz and 384 Kbps: YouTube encoder settings. These are destination requirements and recommendations; they do not establish that your source contains audio or that FFmpeg mapped it.

Send exactly one audio stream to YouTube. In its Live Control Room guidance, YouTube distinguishes the errors “Please provide one audio stream. The ingestion stream contains no audio stream” and “Please provide only one audio stream. The ingestion stream contains multiple audio streams.” The same guidance says YouTube’s pipeline requires audio on all videos: YouTube live-stream error messages.

4. Check the MediaMTX listener, path, and runtime tracks

Verify that FFmpeg is publishing to the intended MediaMTX listener and path, and inspect MediaMTX’s runtime logs or stream information to see whether audio is present there. MediaMTX documents RTMP audio support for codecs including AAC and MP3: MediaMTX RTMP features. A supported-codec list describes what the protocol can carry; it does not prove that a particular publishing session contains an audio track.

5. Use YouTube’s health messages, then investigate the network

Read the Live Control Room’s stream-health status and error details. A missing-audio message points back to the output track or source; a multiple-audio message points to stream selection or muxing; an audio-settings message calls for checking the output codec and settings. If the locally monitored encoder output and archive contain sound but YouTube does not, check outbound network health as YouTube recommends in its troubleshooting guidance.

Choose the fix that matches the failure boundary

Evidence Likely area to inspect Next check
The source monitor or local recording is silent. Source capture or routing. Confirm the intended audio device or track is active and routed into the encoder; check encoder audio controls and errors.
FFmpeg detects audio, but its output has none. FFmpeg selection or output configuration. Review input indices, mapping, and audio options; verify the emitted output contains one audio stream.
FFmpeg output has audio, but MediaMTX does not report an audio track on the expected path. Publishing destination, path, or transport. Check the listener and path in the FFmpeg destination and inspect MediaMTX runtime logs and tracks.
MediaMTX reports audio, but YouTube reports none, multiple streams, or unsuitable settings. Outgoing YouTube leg or ingest configuration. Check that the final output contains exactly one supported audio stream and uses appropriate settings for the selected channel format.
The encoder preview and archive are healthy, but the received stream is not. Outbound connectivity or the ingest leg. Check network health and compare the output immediately before YouTube with Live Control Room status.

Keep the MediaMTX-to-YouTube relay distinction clear

A common architecture has a source published to MediaMTX and a separate FFmpeg process reading that path and publishing to YouTube. In that arrangement, the incoming MediaMTX path and outgoing YouTube output are separate boundaries: audio can exist on the first leg yet be absent or unsuitable on the second. A 2023 MediaMTX maintainer discussion about YouTube restreaming describes an RTSP source with FFmpeg reading a local RTSP path and publishing FLV to YouTube RTMP; the maintainer directs operators to check FFmpeg logs for the outgoing leg. Treat that discussion as historical topology context, not a current universal configuration. Verify current endpoints, codecs, MediaMTX configuration, and YouTube stream details for your installation.
