For a single always-on YouTube feed that mainly needs a relay, start with MediaMTX: its official documentation gives a direct RTMPS forwarding configuration for YouTube. Choose OvenMediaEngine (OME) when you need its documented transcoding, broader ingest and playback options, or Origin-Edge design. Neither server guarantees that a YouTube stream will stay live end to end; the source, host, network, YouTube connection, and monitoring all matter.
What each server is built to do
MediaMTX: a direct relay path
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and proxy for publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playback. It supports RTMP workflows and documents a YouTube RTMPS forwarding configuration. Its introduction also describes serving always-available streams when the publisher is offline; that does not mean a missing source continues to provide content or that the YouTube connection cannot fail. See the MediaMTX introduction and forwarding documentation.
OvenMediaEngine: more options for ingest and delivery
OME documents inputs including WebRTC, SRT, RTMP, RTSP, and MPEG-2 TS, and delivery through WebRTC and LL-HLS. Its project documentation also describes an embedded live transcoder, adaptive-bitrate workflows, and Origin-Edge clustering. These capabilities make it a better fit when you need to transform a feed, deliver multiple formats, or build an origin/edge topology—not because the documentation establishes that OME is faster, more reliable, or more resource-efficient for this specific YouTube use case. See its RTMP documentation, project repository, and configuration guide.
Which one fits your YouTube workflow?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Forward one feed to YouTube | MediaMTX | Its official documentation shows the YouTube RTMPS forwarding path. |
| Transcode or serve viewers in multiple formats | OvenMediaEngine | OME documents embedded transcoding and WebRTC/LL-HLS delivery. |
| Ingest through protocols such as SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, or MPEG-2 TS | OvenMediaEngine is a candidate | These inputs appear in OME’s documented protocol set; verify the direction and exact configuration you need. |
| Keep setup relatively simple for a relay | MediaMTX is a candidate | It describes itself as zero-dependency and offers standalone or Docker installation; its install guide recommends Docker for production. |
| Serve YouTube as the only viewer destination | Usually MediaMTX for a basic relay | OME’s direct-playback features may add little if YouTube is the sole destination. This is an inference from documented features, not a performance comparison. |
MediaMTX lists a broad protocol set and explicit OBS publishing support; OME lists its own ingest and delivery choices. Check the exact protocol direction and version-specific configuration in the relevant MediaMTX publishing guide or OME documentation before designing around a particular source or client. Setup effort is a practical decision factor, not a measured benchmark.

How the YouTube relay path works
A typical layout is source or encoder → MediaMTX → YouTube Live. MediaMTX’s forwarding example uses an RTMPS destination and a stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS URL and key shown for your stream; use the endpoint YouTube supplies rather than assuming a fixed ingest hostname. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Prepare the source. Publish a continuous feed to the MediaMTX path you configure. If the source stops, a continuously running server process alone does not create replacement content.
- Configure forwarding. Follow the MediaMTX forwarding guide for the RTMPS destination and stream key. Protect the key as a credential and do not expose it in a public configuration, log, or screenshot.
- Start the YouTube broadcast. Set up the stream in Live Control Room, confirm the incoming preview, then start the broadcast according to YouTube’s encoder workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- For OME, validate the outbound leg separately. OME’s RTMP page documents an encoder publishing to an OME host using a configured application and stream name. That confirms ingest into OME; it is not, by itself, documentation of an equivalent simple OME-to-YouTube forwarding setup. Check the chosen OME version and configuration before relying on that topology.
MediaMTX documentation states: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” Ensure even a generated or ambient loop includes both tracks. See MediaMTX’s forwarding page.

YouTube encoder settings and prerequisites
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026 (the page does not state a publication year), recommends RTMPS. Its H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. The same guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s published recommendations; confirm the current values and that your encoder path supports your chosen codec before deployment. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to its live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Set up the encoder ahead of time, preview the feed in Live Control Room, and monitor audio and video quality during operation. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing the setup; if using a backup encoder, test that failover as well.
What “always on” requires operationally
MediaMTX or OME is only one component. A dependable continuous broadcast also needs a persistent source or designed fallback, a host with stable power and network connectivity, automatic process recovery, and monitoring with a response plan for a failed YouTube publish. Product documentation describes capabilities; it does not establish an end-to-end uptime guarantee for either server.

Plan separate recording if the content must be retained. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. A 24/7 broadcast should not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive as its only copy. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and encoder setup guidance.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the feed | Wrong or outdated RTMPS URL/key, or an incomplete outgoing feed | Copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, verify the forwarding configuration, and confirm the feed has both audio and video. |
| The server is running but the channel is not showing live content | The source or publishing connection has stopped; an always-running server does not replace missing media | Check source publishing, server logs, network connectivity, and the YouTube preview. Configure recovery and alerting for each leg. |
| Audio or video quality is unstable | Encoder settings or network conditions may not suit the stream | Test with YouTube’s current codec, bitrate, frame-rate, CBR, and keyframe recommendations; monitor audio and video during the test. |
| A 24/7 broadcast has no complete YouTube archive | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an automatic archive | Use a separate recording or archive workflow and verify it is saving before relying on it. |
| OME receives a feed, but YouTube does not | Successful RTMP ingest into OME does not establish that the outbound YouTube leg is configured | Verify the OME-to-YouTube output configuration for your selected version; do not assume its ingest example is a forwarding recipe. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube without maintaining a server and source at home, StreamNeo is the first alternative to try: it runs from the cloud, accepts video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. The workflow is upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-live workflow. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
