If your only goal is to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live on repeat, you may not need MediaMTX: FFmpeg can loop a file, while a hosted service can keep playback running without a computer at home. Keep MediaMTX when you need its media-server functions—such as protocol conversion, forwarding, or serving streams—and choose an alternative based on whether you want a command-line encoder, visual production software, cloud playback, or dedicated hardware.
What MediaMTX does—and when you can skip it
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy/router: it can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time streams, convert between protocols, and serve streams. Those roles differ from simply reading a file and sending it to YouTube. MediaMTX’s introduction describes its server capabilities.
If you only need one local file to repeat into a YouTube live channel, an encoder such as FFmpeg may be enough. If you rely on MediaMTX for routing, protocol conversion, forwarding, or serving viewers, keep it and change the publishing or automation component instead. MediaMTX documents forwarding in its stream-forwarding guide.
Alternatives by workflow
These options do different jobs; they are not all direct replacements for a media server. The sources do not provide controlled performance tests, comparative reliability rankings, CPU comparisons, or current prices, so the distinctions below are about workflow fit rather than measured quality.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream
-re reads at native playback rate, -stream_loop -1 repeats indefinitely, -i selects the input, -c copy copies the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding, and -f flv sets the output container. Replace file.mp4 with your file and the RTMP address with the intended destination.
This exact example targets a local MediaMTX listener at localhost:1935/mystream; it does not prove that the same command can be pointed unchanged at YouTube. For a direct YouTube workflow, use the current server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio and configure an encoder for that destination. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where those values are entered. Keep the stream key secret.

If you use MediaMTX to forward to YouTube, follow its YouTube forwarding guidance and verify the ingest endpoint there before setup, since the documented example may change. That guide warns that YouTube requires both video and audio tracks; a video-only stream may be silently rejected.
For unattended local playback, the machine running FFmpeg must remain on, connected, and supervised. Arrange process monitoring or a restart procedure for interruptions; an infinite loop flag does not itself restart a process that exits or a machine that loses power.

Use the alternatives that fit your setup
Choose OBS for visual production
OBS is a better fit than a bare command when the stream needs scenes, overlays, or hands-on production controls. MediaMTX provides OBS publishing instructions; YouTube also lists encoder software as a streaming route. The available documentation does not establish that OBS alone provides unattended infinite playback or automatic recovery in every setup, so verify the playback and restart workflow you need.
Choose cloud scheduling for unattended playback
Gyre is listed by YouTube for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Restream documents automatic scheduling of uploaded prerecorded videos, but the cited help-center information does not establish endless looping. Check current service features and terms directly before relying on either for a continuous channel.

Choose hardware for an appliance-style setup
AJA HELO Plus is a standalone H.264 encoder; YouTube describes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialized hardware route, not a like-for-like software media server replacement. Confirm the exact configuration and availability for your needs.
Set up and operate a long YouTube stream carefully
Use the current YouTube destination details
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its current server URL and stream key.
- Enter those details in the encoder or forwarding setup you chose. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in a public command or screenshot.
- Before committing to a long broadcast, confirm that the outgoing stream includes both audio and video if you are forwarding through the MediaMTX YouTube setup.
Allow upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends outbound capacity equal to the primary stream bitrate plus the backup stream bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. This is a bandwidth-planning recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable. YouTube also advises checking local archive integrity and testing encoder failover in its streaming tips.
Plan for archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. If keeping a recording matters, preserve a separate local copy rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Troubleshooting common failures
- The FFmpeg example cannot reach its destination: The documented command publishes to a local MediaMTX RTMP listener. Confirm that MediaMTX is running and listening at the specified address, or configure a separate direct-to-YouTube encoder workflow using YouTube’s current server URL and key.
- YouTube does not accept a forwarded stream: Recheck the current ingest endpoint and stream key. If using the documented MediaMTX forwarding setup, ensure the stream contains both audio and video tracks.
- The broadcast disconnects or becomes unstable: Check outbound bandwidth against the primary and backup bitrate requirement plus the recommended 20% headroom. Inspect the local recording and test failover before a critical long stream.
- The stream ends when nobody is watching the computer: A local FFmpeg or OBS process depends on its host machine and connection. Keep them powered and supervised, or choose a cloud workflow designed for unattended playback.
- A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive or rewind: YouTube may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours, and DVR may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Keep a separate local recording when completeness matters.
