Mediacorp’s two-part documentary Inside Unit 731: Japan’s Secret Human Experiments investigates Japan’s wartime biological-warfare programme, centering on former teenage recruit Hideo Shimizu. The producer says it draws on survivor testimony, declassified documents and investigations across five countries. A report published on 11 October 2026 says the documentary won a Singapore history-documentary award and passed 1.45 million YouTube views; those claims have not been independently confirmed against primary records.
What is the documentary about?
Mediacorp’s official programme page describes Inside Unit 731: Japan’s Secret Human Experiments as a two-part English-language investigation, with each episode listed at 60 minutes and the production year given as 2026. Its synopsis focuses on Unit 731, a Japanese wartime biological-warfare unit, and Hideo Shimizu, whom Mediacorp identifies as one of its last surviving members and a teenage recruit at its Harbin complex.
The producer says the series uses survivor testimony, declassified documents and investigations in Japan, China, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. Its stated subjects include biological-weapons development, human experiments, germ attacks on civilians and postwar decisions—including a covert deal with the United States—that the synopsis says helped keep the history hidden. These are the programme’s own descriptions of its scope; the synopsis is not, by itself, independent verification of each historical claim.
What does the Singapore documentary say it investigates across Asia?
The programme’s stated geographic scope extends beyond China, where its Harbin setting is central. Mediacorp says its investigation includes Singapore, and Issei Hironaka, a Japanese scholar identified in a later report as appearing in the documentary, says the history of Japanese forces’ biological-weapons development in Southeast Asia deserves attention alongside events in China.

For historical context on Singapore, the National Library Board’s BiblioAsia published a 2018 feature on OKA 9420, described as Unit 731’s Singapore branch. The feature traces its account to Singapore researcher Lim Shao Bin and discusses wartime records, memoirs and other historical materials. Its detailed claims belong to that feature and its cited sources; they should not be treated as direct confirmation by Mediacorp’s 2026 documentary.
What recognition and audience figures have been reported?
China Reporter’s article of 11 October 2026 says the documentary received Singapore’s Best History Documentary award at the 2026 Asian Academy Creative Awards. It also reports that the programme became a finalist in the Association for International Broadcasting’s international affairs documentary category, with results due in London on 20 November.

The same article says YouTube viewership had exceeded 1.45 million and that a Spanish-language version was scheduled to premiere on Movistar Plus+ on 22 October. These are claims attributed to China Reporter; the award, finalist status, view count and scheduled release were not independently confirmed against primary award or platform records. The report’s wording does not establish a current view count or whether the planned Spanish-language premiere took place.
Who is the Japanese scholar quoted about the documentary?
China Reporter identifies Issei Hironaka as an associate professor at Aichi Gakuin University in Japan and says he appears in the documentary. The outlet attributes to him the view that the programme draws attention to biological-weapons development by Japanese forces in Southeast Asia as well as China. It quotes him as saying, “the significant attention to this documentary demonstrates the public’s hunger for historical truth.” The quotation is presented in the report’s English-language text.

How to distinguish this programme from another Unit 731 documentary
A separate documentary, The Truths of the Crime Committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army, appears on an award-entry page from the Belt and Road News Network. That is a different work, not another name for Mediacorp’s series. The entry reports awards and audience figures for its own programme; those figures should not be merged with or compared directly to the claims about Inside Unit 731 without matching measurement periods, platforms and definitions.

The National Library Board feature names former OKA 9420 worker Koichi Takebana’s memoir, Fleas, Rats and Plague: I Saw All Three (1991), as a source on the branch’s structure and operations. It is a historical reading lead, not a substitute for evaluating the feature’s cited evidence.
