What is the current status of Maze Runner 4?
The most specific public update is TheWrap’s May 3, 2024 report that a new Maze Runner movie was in development at Disney’s 20th Century Studios. The report called it a “continuation,” not a direct sequel to the original heroes’ story and not a remake of the 2014 film.

That wording means the project would remain in the Maze Runner universe while potentially following a different group of characters. The report said the story would presumably involve new characters attempting to escape a Glade, but that was an inference about the planned direction rather than a released synopsis.
The available reporting for this article does not verify a subsequent official announcement. Development projects can change or stop, so the 2024 report should not be treated as confirmation that filming is underway or that a theatrical date exists.

What did the 2024 report attach to the project?

Jack Paglen, whose credits include Transcendence, was reported to be in talks to write the screenplay. “In talks” does not establish a finalized script or a completed writing credit.
Producer and original filmmakers
Wes Ball, who directed all three released Maze Runner films, was reported as a producer. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen were also reported as producers.
What was not announced
- No release date or release year was given.
- No production start date was reported.
- No final title was announced; “Maze Runner 4” is a fan shorthand.
- No original actor was confirmed to return.
- No particular James Dashner novel was identified as the film’s source.
Continuation, sequel or remake?

TheWrap reported the original trilogy’s worldwide gross as $348 million in 2024; that figure is attributed to TheWrap and has not been independently reconciled here with a box-office database.
Could Maze Runner 4 adapt one of the books?
James Dashner’s novels are the source material for the films. Penguin Random House’s Maze Runner series catalog lists The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, the prequels The Kill Order and The Fever Code, and the later books The Maze Cutter and The Godhead Complex.

Those books give the franchise additional settings and characters, but the 2024 film report did not identify any one novel as the adaptation being developed. Reading them can provide more Maze Runner material, not confirmation of the next film’s plot.

For a reliable update, look for a dated announcement from 20th Century Studios or corroboration in established entertainment trade reporting that names specific production facts. The most meaningful milestones would be:

- casting information confirmed by the studio or reputable trades;

- an announced release date and distribution plan.
Until one of those milestones is documented, “Maze Runner 4” describes a reported development project rather than a scheduled movie.
