Yes. Max is alive at the end of Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1, but she is still comatose in the real world and trapped inside Vecna’s mental prison. She finds a refuge there and nearly reaches an exit, but the opening closes before she can escape. That is her status at the end of Volume 1—not her final fate in the completed series.
What happened to Max in Volume 1?
Max’s body has been in a coma since the end of Season 4. In Volume 1, the story reveals that her consciousness is not simply absent: she is caught in Vecna’s mental prison, moving through memories as he pursues her. Netflix’s Episode 4 ending explainer describes how she eventually finds a cave system where she can hide.
The cave gives Max temporary shelter, not freedom. She remains inside Vecna’s mental landscape, while her body lies unconscious in the hospital. This distinction explains why she can experience events and try to escape even though she has not awakened.
Why can’t Eleven find her?
At the end of Season 4, Eleven could not sense Max. Volume 1 explains the gap: Max’s consciousness is held in Vecna’s mental prison, rather than being available to reach in the way Eleven expects. Her hiding place in the cave helps keep her out of Vecna’s grasp, but it also leaves her isolated from the people trying to reach her.

How does Max’s escape attempt fail?
Max finds a possible way out through a memory, with “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” playing in her hospital room as a connection to the outside world. She gets close to escaping, but the portal disappears when the song stops. Volume 1 ends with Max still trapped and her body still comatose.
The song’s role is a continuation of its importance to Max in Season 4, not proof that music alone has freed her. Netflix Tudum reported on June 22, 2023, that Kate Bush’s song had reached 1 billion Spotify streams; its report also said global streams rose by more than 8,700% during the song’s 2022 resurgence after its use in Stranger Things 4. Those figures describe the reported milestone and the 2022 surge, respectively—not a current streaming count.

Spoilers beyond Volume 1: Does Max escape later?
Yes. The following reveals events from Volume 2 and the series finale.
In Volume 2, Netflix calls Vecna’s mental setting Camazotz. Max and Holly find a way out, and Max recognizes the portal associated with Lucas carrying her as her route back to the real world. The later story broadens the idea of a connection to reality: it is not only the song that matters; a familiar object or relationship can also help anchor someone.
