When Max will not open, crashes back to the Roku home screen, buffers, or rejects your subscription, start with the least disruptive fixes. Test another title and another app, then restart Roku, check its connection, update Max and Roku, sign in again, power-cycle the device, and only then reinstall the channel. Keep a factory reset as a last resort.
First, identify what is failing
“Max not working” can describe several different problems. The symptom determines which branch to follow.
| Symptom | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Max will not open or returns to Home | Restart, update, power-cycle, then reinstall |
| Loading screen, buffering, or video will not start | Test another app, run Roku’s connection test, and check Wi‑Fi |
| Repeated sign-outs or locked subscriber content | Sign out, sign in to the correct account, and verify billing |
| Only one movie or episode fails | Try another episode, title, or device before changing Roku |
| “Can’t run app” or “Insufficient memory” | Restart and remove unused channels |
| Several Roku apps fail | Investigate Roku, power, Wi‑Fi, router, or internet-provider issues |
Roku advises checking the streaming provider when a particular app has a service interruption. Test two or three Max titles and at least one other Roku app before assuming Max itself is down: Roku’s playback troubleshooting guide.
Seven fixes, in the safest order
1. Restart Roku, then sign in to Max again
A restart refreshes the device and app state without changing your other channels. If Max is usable, open its Settings, choose Sign Out, and then restart Roku.

- Roku TV: Home → Settings → System → Power → System restart. Some models do not show the Power submenu; use the restart option available on your TV.
Open Max after the restart and sign in with the account that owns the subscription.
2. Run Roku’s built-in connection test
For buffering, connection errors, or playback that stops shortly after starting, go to Home → Settings → Network → Check connection. The test helps distinguish a failure to reach your Wi‑Fi network from a problem reaching the internet.
Max’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps available download speed for HD and 50+ Mbps recommended for 4K. Those are guidance figures, not guarantees: the Roku may receive less than a phone in the same home because of distance, interference, a congested Wi‑Fi band, or router load. If the test fails, restart the router, improve the Roku’s signal, or use Ethernet where your model supports it. See Max’s Roku troubleshooting instructions.
3. Update the Max channel and Roku software
An outdated channel or Roku build can cause crashes, black screens, or features that stopped working after a service change.

- On the Roku Home screen, highlight Max.
- Press the Star (*) button.
- Choose Check for updates, if that option appears.
- Then open Settings → System → System update and select Check now.
Roku also recommends checking for channel updates when an app will not open or crashes. Menu wording can vary slightly by Roku TV and player model.
4. Sign out, restart, and sign in again
If Max opens but repeatedly signs you out, rejects authorization, or shows a plan as unavailable, use Max’s Settings → Sign Out. Restart Roku using the player or TV path in Fix 1, then sign in again. This is safer than deleting the channel and preserves your other Roku setup.
5. Unplug Roku for 20 seconds
A menu restart and a full power cycle are different. Unplug the Roku player or Roku TV, wait 20 seconds, reconnect it, and test Max. This is Max’s Roku-specific interval. It is useful when the interface is hung, the app will not launch after a menu restart, or the device has remained in standby for a long time. Roku’s general guidance also supports unplugging the device.
6. Remove and reinstall Max
Use this when Max alone remains broken after updates and restarts.

- Highlight Max on the Home screen.
- Press Star (*).
- Choose Remove app (some screens say Remove channel) and confirm.
- Restart Roku.
- Open the Roku Streaming Store, search for Max, and choose Add app.
- Open Max and sign in.
The restart between removal and reinstallation gives Roku a clean channel reload. If Remove app is missing, an active subscription billed through Roku may be the reason. Roku says an active subscription or current billing cycle can prevent removal. Manage that subscription at my.roku.com/subscriptions rather than repeatedly trying to delete the channel. Reference: Roku’s app-removal guidance.
7. Check storage, account, title scope, and service status
Storage errors
For “Can’t run app” or “Insufficient memory,” restart or unplug Roku, remove unused channels, and try Max again. Low storage can prevent channels from installing or running; network trouble can produce similar launch errors. Follow Roku’s memory and app-error steps.
Subscription and billing
If premium titles are locked, verify the subscription with the correct billing provider. A subscription billed directly by Max must be checked in the Max account. For Roku Pay, review active subscriptions at my.roku.com/subscriptions. Confirm that the Max login on Roku is the account linked to that plan. Roku’s account guidance is available in its playback help.
One title versus the whole service
Try another episode of the same series, a different Max movie or series, and the failing title on another device if available. If everything else plays, do not factory-reset Roku or immediately reinstall; the problem may be title-specific, profile-related, an entitlement issue, or a temporary provider error.

Possible outage
If every Max title fails while other Roku apps work, check Max’s official help and support channels. If several apps fail, concentrate on Roku, Wi‑Fi, router, power, storage, or your internet provider instead of treating it as a Max-only outage.
When to contact Max or Roku
Stop repeating the same fixes when Max still fails after the sequence, especially if it also fails on another supported device or the same error code persists after reinstalling. Contact Max when other Roku apps work but Max does not; contact Roku when Roku cannot connect, update, run several apps, or repeatedly freezes.
Before contacting support, record the exact on-screen error message or code, Roku model, Roku software version, whether other apps work, whether all Max titles fail, whether Max works on a phone or computer, and whether billing is through Max or Roku. Max specifically asks users to retain the displayed error or code: Max support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a factory reset should wait
A factory reset returns the Roku to its factory-new state, erases configuration, and requires you to set up apps and accounts again. It is disproportionate for a Max-only failure. Consider it only after Max works elsewhere, multiple Roku apps fail, updates, restarts, power cycling, storage cleanup, and reinstalling have all failed, and Roku support recommends it. See Roku’s factory-reset procedure.

When replacement hardware is reasonable
Do not buy a new Roku merely because Max is broken. Replacement becomes reasonable when several apps fail, the device repeatedly reports insufficient memory, cannot update, freezes or reboots regularly, or remains unstable after device-wide troubleshooting. Compare current players at Roku’s official player page. A network upgrade is relevant only if the Roku connection test and household usage show a genuine bandwidth or Wi‑Fi limitation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Max keep returning to the Roku home screen?
Restart Roku, update Max and Roku, power-cycle the device, and reinstall Max if the crash continues. If other apps work after these steps, contact Max with the exact error details.
Why can’t I remove Max from Roku?
An active Max subscription billed through Roku or an active billing cycle can hide Remove app. Manage the subscription at my.roku.com/subscriptions first.
Does restarting Roku clear the Max cache?
Roku does not provide a universal user-facing cache-clear command. Restarting refreshes the device and app state; official guidance emphasizes restart, updates, power cycling, and reinstalling instead.
Why does Max buffer when Netflix or YouTube works?
Max may be affected by its own app state, account authorization, a title-specific problem, or a service interruption. Test several Max titles, run Roku’s connection test, and update the channel before changing your internet plan.
Will reinstalling Max cancel my subscription?
Removing and adding the channel does not itself cancel a subscription. Billing remains with Max or Roku, so verify the provider before signing in again.
