Maura Murray remains missing. The FBI says the 21-year-old University of Massachusetts Amherst nursing student disappeared after her car became stuck off Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire, on February 9, 2004. Her father, Fred Murray, first spoke publicly about a possible destination in the White Mountains; years later, he said he believed a crime had occurred. Those are different statements made at different times—not an established account of what happened.

What is confirmed about Maura Murray’s disappearance?

The FBI’s missing-person record says Murray left UMass Amherst and was last seen on ATM surveillance earlier on February 9, wearing a dark jacket and jeans. It says she had not told others she planned to travel to New Hampshire. At about 7:30 p.m., her black Saturn left Route 112 and became stuck on snow-covered roads. Murray was gone when police arrived. The FBI summarizes the central fact this way: “Murray was not present at the crash scene when police arrived and has not been seen or heard from since.”

The FBI record also says an age-progression image was released in February 2024. It remains a missing-person listing; it does not, by itself, establish the current status of investigative activity.

Why detailed timelines need care

A community-maintained case page compiles a more detailed sequence of searches, calls, emails, purchases, and witness accounts. The page says its information comes from family, friends, news accounts, and government releases, and is not guaranteed accurate. Those details can provide leads or context, but they should not be presented as a definitive, minute-by-minute police timeline where accounts may conflict.

Where did her father initially think she was headed?

In a CNN interview aired February 17, 2004, Fred Murray said the direction of travel suggested an area in the White Mountains familiar to the family from camping and hiking. He described the sudden trip as unlike her usual behavior. That was his early interpretation, not a confirmed destination or law-enforcement finding.

Bill Rausch, Murray’s boyfriend at the time, said in the same interview that people close to her did not know exactly what had happened. He raised the possibility that she had been picked up shortly after witnesses saw her, or after walking up the road. The interview records an early possibility, not evidence that a ride occurred.

What did Fred Murray later say about a possible crime?

In later public statements, Fred Murray said he believed Maura was dead and that a crime had occurred. He also advanced the belief that her remains might be buried in a basement near the crash site. These are his allegations and beliefs; they are not established findings about a suspect, a crime, or where Maura went.

An Associated Press report in 2019 said New Hampshire officials were aware of the allegation and described the case as open and active at that time. The report also said the area had previously been searched, including with dogs, without significant findings. A prior search that found no significant evidence neither proves nor substantiates the basement allegation.

These public statements should not be collapsed into a single, settled “family theory.” The available accounts show Fred Murray’s early White Mountains idea and later homicide belief, as well as Rausch’s early ride possibility. They do not establish that every family member has shared one explanation over time.

What have official searches and evidence updates established?

The Loon Mountain bone fragments

A 2021 release posted by the family reported that New Hampshire State Police, working with state and federal authorities, determined human bone fragments found on Loon Mountain were not Maura Murray. Radiocarbon testing placed the remains between 1774 and 1942, with 95.4% probability. That percentage describes the estimated age range of the fragments; it is not a probability that the remains were or were not Maura. Authorities’ reported conclusion was that they were not hers.

The 2022 search in Landaff and Easton

In July 2022, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella and State Police Colonel Nathan Noyes announced a ground search in Landaff and Easton, with assistance from Fish and Game. The announcement described it as a more extensive search of nearby areas that had previously been searched in a limited fashion. It also said: “The search activity is not the result of new information in the case.” Julie Murray said the family was aware of the search and working with law enforcement. The announcement said no further details would be released because the investigation was ongoing.

The material available here does not establish an official investigative update after that 2022 announcement. The search is evidence that authorities conducted that operation; its stated purpose and timing do not resolve what happened to Maura.

Why has the family challenged access to case information?

A 2006 New Hampshire Supreme Court opinion confirms that Fred Murray sought investigative records from agencies through the state Right-to-Know law and federal Freedom of Information Act. Almost all of his requests were denied at that time on investigatory or privacy grounds. The court case helps explain the family’s long-running frustration with access to information, but it is not proof that investigators acted improperly.

Was the car crash an accident, and was Maura ever found?

The facts summarized in the FBI listing establish that the Saturn left the road and became stuck, and that Maura was not there when police arrived. They do not establish whether the departure from the road was accidental, what happened after she left the crash scene, or where she went. The FBI record continues to list her as missing; none of the updates described above resolves her disappearance.

How to assess the competing explanations

When following this case, keep the source and status of each claim attached to it. A contemporaneous interview can show what a person believed at the time, but it cannot independently prove a destination or event. A later family allegation remains an allegation unless supported by verified evidence. An official search establishes that authorities searched an area, not that any particular theory is true. And an online account or detailed timeline should be weighed according to its sourcing, especially when accounts differ.

  • Official record: The FBI identifies Murray as missing and records the car’s location and her absence when police arrived.
  • Family or close-contact statement: Attribute the claim to the named person and date or context; do not recast it as a finding shared by everyone.
  • Unresolved possibility: A possible ride, destination, or crime should remain a possibility unless reliable evidence confirms it.
