Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith novelization received a deluxe hardcover for the film’s 20th anniversary. Published October 14, 2025, the $60 edition adds more than 150 annotations from Stover alongside upgraded physical features. Fans often call the book one of the best Star Wars novelizations; that reputation is a matter of taste, not an objective ranking.
What’s in the deluxe edition?
Penguin Random House lists the hardcover at $60, with 448 pages and ISBN 9780593974803. Its publication date was October 14, 2025. The publisher’s listing confirms those product details but does not enumerate the special design features.
Gizmodo’s April 7, 2025 report describes an acetate jacket with foil stamping, a paper-over-board case, gilded and stained edges, illustrated full-color endpapers, and a red satin ribbon marker. The same report says the book contains more than 150 annotations by Stover. These physical details and the annotation count are reported by Gizmodo.
Why the novelization has its own following
Stover described his aim as making a novel that could stand on its own, rather than simply transcribing the film. In a Penguin Random House interview, he said he tried to “back-create” a novel from George Lucas’s story and screenplay, as if the film had been based on the book. His goal, he said, was “not just to be a good novelization, but a good novel. A great story on its own terms.”

He worked from the screenplay as it stood at the end of principal photography, then adjusted for later plot changes and rewrites. Stover said Lucas allowed him latitude with dialogue and detail while remaining clear about the characters’ motivations. That approach helps explain why the book is discussed as more than a plot recap, without making its quality a universal verdict.

What the publisher says about the edition
Tom Hoeler, identified by Gizmodo as a Random House World representative, called the edition “a fully annotated edition that gives readers unprecedented insight to the creation of this masterpiece.” Hoeler also praised the novelization’s approach to adapting characters and story from screen to page. Those are promotional comments from a publisher representative, rather than independent critical assessments.
