The movie most likely meant by this headline is The Lost Bus, an R-rated drama about a school bus driver and a teacher trying to save 22 children during a wildfire. Apple says the film is inspired by real events. It premiered in U.S. theaters on September 19, 2025, and became available on Apple TV on October 3, 2025.
What is The Lost Bus about?
Apple’s synopsis follows a wayward school bus driver, played by Matthew McConaughey, and a dedicated teacher, played by America Ferrera, as they try to get 22 children through a wildfire. Apple describes the film as inspired by real events and calls it a “white-knuckle ride”—promotional language, rather than a critic’s assessment. Apple TV’s film listing classifies it as an R-rated drama.

Who made the film?
Paul Greengrass directed The Lost Bus, and Brad Ingelsby is credited as its writer on Apple’s official press page, which also links the trailer.
When did it come out, and where can you watch it?
The U.S. theatrical release was September 19, 2025, followed by an Apple TV release on October 3, 2025. Apple currently lists the film as available on Apple TV; check the service’s listing for current access in your region, since catalog availability can change. View Apple TV’s listing.
Does the headline’s six-year claim check out?
The official film pages identify McConaughey’s role in The Lost Bus, but they do not establish that it was his first starring movie role in six years or define what counts as a “starring” role. Treat that interval as a headline claim, not a fact confirmed by those pages.

The Lost Bus is the wildfire drama, not The Rivals of Amziah King, a separate 2026 film listed by Black Bear Pictures. It is also distinct from Apple’s Brothers, a TV-MA comedy series that premiered September 23, 2026, and features McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing fictionalized versions of themselves; see Apple’s series listing.
