“The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet’s Function”, which aired November 16, 2025, is most effective when its supernatural menace presses against the dangers people create for one another. Charlotte’s effort to help Hank gives the episode’s 1960s racism a personal stake, while Marge’s eye-related horror turns a child’s insecurity into a disturbing physical image. The military’s expanding origin story adds lore, but its magical-rock mechanism is less affecting than the children and parents at the story’s center.

How the episode makes fear feel human

The children are trying to understand how the entity uses fear against its victims. Will reasons that it deliberately intensifies that fear, and the group’s darkly comic idea of using Valium to blunt it makes their theorizing feel like a child’s practical response to an impossible threat. Lilly’s visions and Marge’s eye-related attack then make the idea bodily and immediate. The horror is not just that the children encounter something supernatural; it is that they are left to interpret and manage a danger adults may not fully understand.

The Hanlon parents offer a meaningful counterpoint to the familiar horror-story pattern of adults dismissing children. The A.V. Club’s William Hughes notes that Leroy and Charlotte pay attention to their son’s reports. That care does not make the danger disappear, but it gives the children’s fear a family context: they have adults who are willing to listen, even as Derry’s larger forces close in.

Marge’s eye scare is more than a shock image

The episode’s eye mutation is its most graphic piece of body horror. The British Board of Film Classification flags eye-injury detail and attempted self-injury in its content advice, so this is a scene to approach cautiously if those images are difficult for you. Its character purpose is clearer in Matilda Lawler’s account to TV Insider: the scare prompts Marge to reflect on her relationships and recognize that she belongs with Lilly and the other outsiders. The scene’s grotesquerie gives a concrete shape to her insecurity, rather than leaving it as an abstract adolescent worry.

That reading adds emotional force without making the sequence less disturbing. The scare can register as both a shock set piece and a moment of self-recognition; how well those functions balance will depend on whether the viewer finds the character beat convincing amid the graphic effects.

Hank’s case brings social peril into the ghost story

Charlotte’s pursuit of Hank’s case is where the episode’s human horror most directly intersects with its supernatural one. In interview coverage, Hank says he was with a white woman when the theater murders took place and fears that disclosing the relationship could put them both in danger. His problem is not simply finding a useful alibi: the racial order around him makes telling the truth perilous.

Charlotte’s willingness to help gives that injustice a human face. The episode asks viewers to hold two kinds of danger together: the entity’s violence and the consequences of a racist society that can threaten people seeking justice. The A.V. Club reads Charlotte as alert to that injustice, making her involvement more than a procedural device. The BBFC separately notes that the 1960s-set episode includes occasional scenes involving racism and mental-health discrimination; that is useful content context, not a judgment about the episode’s historical accuracy.

The military plot expands the mythology—and tests the focus

General Shaw escalates his pursuit of the entity by using Dick Hallorann’s psychic ability to obtain information from Taniel. In TheWrap, Chris Chalk describes Hallorann as reluctant to enter Taniel’s mind for Shaw’s mission: “He hates what he does to Taniel.” That reluctance gives the interrogation a moral cost. Hallorann is not simply a tool for the military plot; he is being made to violate a boundary he wants to keep.

Taniel’s memories lead into the show’s account of the entity’s ancient arrival and its confinement to the area that became Derry. TV Insider describes the series’ fictional mythology as involving a falling star and fragments used to contain the being. The show’s use of Indigenous characters may be intended to give them more weight than they had in the novel and films, as Hughes observes, but its star-fragment mechanism is a separate matter: this is the series’ invented supernatural lore, not documented Indigenous history or a real tradition.

This strand gives the season’s mythology forward motion, but it also takes time away from the more intimate material. Hughes calls the episode “mostly another slow burn” and criticizes the magical-rock plot as an awkward device. IGN’s Tom Jorgensen, by contrast, praised the way the episode advances its storylines and delivers horror. The disagreement points to the episode’s central trade-off: the origin material may reward viewers invested in the larger mystery, yet the military exposition feels less immediate than Hank’s peril, Marge’s vulnerability, or the Hanlons’ attention to their child.

How well does Episode 4 bring its strands together?

The episode works best when supernatural fear and recognizable human pressure sharpen each other. Marge’s body horror carries emotional information; Hank’s concealed alibi shows how injustice can make truth dangerous; and Charlotte’s response connects compassion to action. These scenes make the ghost story feel rooted in the lives of the people it endangers.

The mythology is more uneven. The military’s interest in controlling the entity and the magical-rock explanation broaden the story, but they risk turning an intimate horror drama into a delivery system for lore. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% critic score from eight reviews when accessed in 2026, but that small, time-specific aggregate is not a settled consensus: the skeptical A.V. Club response and the more enthusiastic IGN review show how differently the balance can land. For this episode, the human stakes are the stronger reason to keep watching; the supernatural machinery is intriguing, but not always as persuasive.
