There is no real NFL scheme: in Uber Eats’ 2024 commercial, Matthew McConaughey spins a comic conspiracy theory that football is designed to make viewers hungry. Christian McCaffrey challenges his argument, and Jerry Rice delivers the closing food-name gag.
What is the “elaborate” NFL scheme?
McConaughey’s character claims that football makes people hungry on purpose so they will order food. In the commercial, he calls the game “an elaborate scheme to make you buy more food, and it’s working.” The line is the ad’s joke, not an allegation supported by evidence about the NFL. Campaign creative lead Matthew Woodhams-Roberts posted the transcript.
How the commercial builds the joke
McCaffrey asks why he is still hungry while watching football. McConaughey answers by treating familiar football language as a menu: “turnovers,” “pancake blocks” and “scrambles” all sound like food. He also points to player names as supposed evidence, while McCaffrey pushes back on the theory.
Former 49ers player Jerry Rice appears eating rice, turning the name-based wordplay into the closing gag. The spot uses recognizable football talk and cameos to make McConaughey’s theory absurd; it does not present evidence of an actual league plot.

Who appears, and when did the spot run?
The commercial stars McConaughey, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and former 49ers player Jerry Rice. A September 26, 2024, People exclusive syndicated by Yahoo said the spot would air during Thursday Night Football that day. That publication date and planned broadcast are historical details, not a claim about where the ad can be seen now.
How the spot fit Uber Eats’ football campaign
The commercial was part of Uber Eats’ “National Foodball League” campaign, which connected food ordering with football fandom. The One Club for Creativity’s 2025 One Show case credits Uber Eats, Special US and O Positive, and describes Uber Eats as the NFL’s official on-demand food delivery sponsor.

The campaign reached beyond this one commercial. The One Club case describes integrations involving teams, players, coaches, social and broadcast content, including telestrator segments and game-day merchant deals. Sensor Tower’s December 2024 campaign review names Wendy’s, Little Caesars, Taco Bell and Burger King among participating food advertisers and gives buy-one-get-one offers as examples of Gameday Deals. Those are examples from the 2024 campaign; the sources do not establish that the offers or participating merchants are available today.

No. Its food-ordering call to action promotes Uber Eats, but McConaughey’s “scheme” is a comedic premise rather than a factual explanation of why viewers get hungry. The spot is best understood as food wordplay woven into a football campaign, not as a product comparison or an endorsement of a current deal.
