Matt Bomer says he believes being outed affected his chances of playing Superman in the unmade film project Superman: Flyby. In a 2024 interview, he recalled a roughly four-month audition process and said, “Yeah, that’s my understanding” when asked whether his sexual orientation had affected casting. His account is his understanding, not proof that this was the sole reason he did not play the role.
What Matt Bomer said about the Superman role
In a June 2024 appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Bomer described auditioning for Superman over about four months. He recalled repeated auditions, chemistry reads and a screen test. GameSpot reported the duration and audition details on June 13, 2024: GameSpot’s account of Bomer’s interview.

Asked whether his sexual orientation had affected the casting, Bomer replied, “Yeah, that’s my understanding.” The Guardian’s June 12, 2024 report also quotes him saying he did not know “How, and why, and who [outed me].” Those comments describe what Bomer believes happened; they do not identify who outed him or establish independently that it determined the casting outcome. The Guardian’s report on the interview.
Which Superman project was it?
The role was for Superman: Flyby, a proposed live-action film associated with writer J.J. Abrams and director Brett Ratner. The project was not made, so Bomer did not lose a part in a released Superman film. Earlier reporting described Bomer as briefly cast or attached to Ratner’s project; Ratner later left, and the project went through further development and casting changes. Did being outed definitively cost him the part?
The available accounts do not settle that question. Bomer said he understood his sexuality had affected his chances, while reporting also points to changes in the project, including Ratner’s departure. The coverage does not establish how much each circumstance contributed, or that being outed was the sole reason he did not play Superman. E! Online’s June 13, 2024 account discusses earlier explanations alongside Bomer’s comments: E! Online’s report.
Who outed Matt Bomer?
Bomer said he did not know who did it, or how or why it happened. The reporting cited here does not identify a person responsible, so there is no substantiated name to give.

Bomer later voiced Superman in the animated film Superman: Unbound. That is a separate project and credit, not the live-action Superman: Flyby role he discussed in the interview. Out’s report on Bomer’s Superman voice role.
