In a joint social post reported by the Miami Herald, Abby Howard wrote: “It is with very heavy hearts that we share about the loss of our baby girl born far too soon.” The couple said that at a routine appointment their doctor could not find a heartbeat, after which they were sent for an ultrasound. Their announcement described the loss as occurring around 17 weeks.
The couple had announced the pregnancy in August 2025, according to the same contemporaneous report. The public announcement of the loss followed on September 27.
What they later shared about the cause
Later reporting attributed to the couple the statement that a genetic condition took their daughter’s life around that stage of pregnancy. The specific condition has not been identified in the sources reporting their account. In an October 2025 podcast discussion, the couple said they wanted to keep medical specifics private, as reported in a podcast transcript summary. No diagnosis should be inferred from the phrase “genetic condition.”

The name Emerson Nicole was shared later
The initial announcement referred to the baby as their girl; the name came in a later disclosure. Coverage of the couple’s podcast discussion reported that they named their daughter Emerson Nicole, connecting the name to Abby’s late sister and to a nurse who cared for them.
In reflections on grief reported by National Right to Life News on June 2, 2026, Abby said: “I’m not just grieving a pregnancy; I’m grieving a human. I’m grieving a baby. I’m grieving a daughter. I’m grieving Emerson.” These were Abby’s words about her own experience, not a prescription for how other parents should describe loss.

Later family news does not change the loss
In August 2026, Us Weekly reported that the Howards had welcomed a son following a subsequent pregnancy. That is a separate family update; it does not replace or resolve the loss they described in 2025.
