Marvel has not confirmed that Tony will appear again. The new Avengers: Endgame rerelease, Endgame: Encore, adds a story beat connected to Avengers: Doomsday, but director Anthony Russo did not say Iron Man is in it.
Is Robert Downey Jr. returning as Iron Man?
No. The official announcements confirm Downey’s return to Marvel in a new role: Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. Disney’s 2024 announcement described him as last seen in the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but it did not announce Tony’s return. At San Diego Comic-Con, Downey summed up the new role with the line, “New mask, same task.” Disney’s announcement
Disney’s March 2025 cast announcement also named Downey as Victor von Doom. Being included in the cast does not establish that he will play Tony Stark as well. Disney’s cast announcement
Does Endgame: Encore have a new Iron Man scene?
Marvel describes the added material as a beat that takes the story beyond Steve Rogers’ relationship with Peggy Carter and connects to the birth of Doomsday. Russo said, “There’s certainly a pivotal moment in [Endgame: Encore] at the end where the moment has a different meaning,” then described it as the point where “Doomsday is born.” He did not identify Tony Stark as part of the scene, so it should not be described as an Iron Man return. Is Tony Stark in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars?
That remains unconfirmed. The official material cited here confirms Downey as Doctor Doom, not Tony Stark in either film. A Tony variant, cameo, or other appearance may be a fan theory, but it is not an announced fact. Asked about possible connections between Downey’s Iron Man and Doctor Doom, Russo said, “Everything is best left for the theater,” which does not confirm an Iron Man appearance.
Marvel’s later interview lists Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026. Disney’s earlier March 2025 announcement gave a different date, May 1, 2026; Marvel’s later date is the one to use here. The Marvel interview does not establish a release date for Secret Wars.

What does Endgame establish about Iron Man’s story?
Avengers: Endgame remains Tony Stark’s on-screen ending in the official material covered here. Endgame: Encore revisits that film and adds a beat tied to the next Avengers story; the description does not say that it reverses Tony’s ending. The Associated Press described Endgame as the second-highest-grossing film of all time, with $2.8 billion in ticket sales, in its 2026 reporting. That is historical box-office context, not evidence of a character return.
