What was the twist at the end of the Matlock premiere?
The premiere, which aired September 22, 2024, first presents Matty as a capable but unassuming older lawyer using her folksy manner to get a position at the prestigious Jacobson Moore firm. Its final reveal changes what that behavior means: “Matlock” is a constructed identity, and the job is part of a personal investigation, not merely a new chapter in her legal career. Matty’s investigation is tied to her daughter’s death and her suspicion that people at the firm concealed evidence connected to a drug product. That is her investigative premise; the reveal does not itself establish the suspected concealment as an independently adjudicated fact. The identity secret also gives the title a different meaning: Bates is playing a new character using “Matlock” as part of a cover, not simply returning the original character in a gender-swapped role. Why is Matty pretending to be Matlock?
Her mild, underestimated presentation helps her get inside the firm and maintain access while she pursues answers about her daughter. The cover is part of the investigation: scenes at Jacobson Moore can carry two kinds of stakes at once, the legal problem in front of Matty and what she may be able to learn about the firm’s past. How does the twist change the show?
The series still has room for cases that begin and resolve within an episode, but the audience now knows Matty is also carrying out a longer investigation. The firm is not only her workplace; it is the place where she believes answers may lie. That creates a useful distinction between the procedural and serialized parts of the series:

What has the showrunner said about the twist?
Jennie Snyder Urman is the showrunner, and the premiere coverage attributes discussion of the twist’s purpose to her. The creative idea is to layer the story and overturn the assumptions viewers may form from the familiar title and Matty’s apparent persona. CBS later described the reimagined series as having a “brilliant surprise plot twist” in its announcement of a second-season order (Paramount Press Express).
