Hinds later disputed that description, saying he had been kicked out. Subsequent reporting has not established a definitive account of how the split happened. Hinds died in a motorcycle accident in August 2025, aged 51; the departure is now part of the band’s history.
When did Brent Hinds leave Mastodon?
Mastodon announced the departure on March 7, 2025. The band said it was parting ways with Hinds after 25 years together, thanked him for their shared music and history, and wished him success. The announcement said Mastodon remained inspired to continue and that its 2025 touring plans would remain intact. Pitchfork reported the announcement and tour statement.
Hinds had co-founded Mastodon in 2000 with bassist Troy Sanders, drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher. He was a guitarist and vocalist, and his distinctive country twang and early banjo background contributed to the band’s sound, as Dailor later reflected in a 2026 Guardian interview.
Did Mastodon fire Brent Hinds?
The public accounts differ. Mastodon called the parting mutual in its announcement. In August 2025, Hinds said the band had kicked him out. Guitar World reported his claim: “They kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am.” That is Hinds’s account, not an independently established explanation of the split. Guitar World covered his comments.

What did Mastodon say about the split?
In its March 2025 statement, Mastodon wrote: “Friends and Fans, After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways.” The band added that it was “deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared” and wished Hinds “nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors.” Pitchfork reproduced the statement.
