What After Ike is about
The documentary looks back at the U.S. Army’s 1919 transcontinental motor convoy, a journey that included a young Dwight D. Eisenhower. It considers how the convoy influenced later highway development and the communities shaped by roads. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum describes the film as based on Michael S. Owen’s book of the same title; that description does not establish a current book edition or where the film can be watched.
The 1919 convoy in numbers
The Lincoln Highway Experience reports that the convoy covered 3,251 miles in 62 days, with 81 vehicles and nearly 300 participants. These are figures reported by that institution on its 2026 event page.

Eisenhower’s experience and the highway system
The Lincoln Highway Experience says the journey left a lasting impression on Eisenhower and helped shape his understanding of the need for a modern national highway network. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum highlights the later highway system’s effects on small-town America and communities of color. These are institutional interpretations of the convoy’s longer significance.
How the screening connects to MassMu’s exhibition
Driving Forces: The Lincoln Highway Journey is on view in MassMu’s Main Gallery from May 30 through October 18, 2026. The museum describes the exhibition as an exploration of the Lincoln Highway’s history and symbolic significance. The October 11 screening falls within the exhibition’s run and extends its focus on the road’s place in American history.
