The result is an inviting musical with dazzling moments and genuine feeling—but not enough new material to match the originality of the 1964 film.
What is Mary Poppins Returns about?
Set decades after the 1964 film, the sequel finds Jane and Michael Banks grown up. Michael now has three children, and Mary Poppins returns to help the family through a difficult period. Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Jack, a street lamplighter who joins their adventure. Disney’s official film page and D23 entry establish the characters and premise.
Is Emily Blunt good as Mary Poppins?
Blunt is the film’s central appeal. Rather than imitate Andrews, she gives Mary a brisk, composed presence, with warmth appearing in measured flashes rather than broad sentiment. Her performance makes the character feel recognisable without turning the sequel into a simple impersonation. Miranda brings easy energy as Jack, while the ensemble gives the Banks household a convincing emotional center.
Are the songs and spectacle any good?
Disney says the production features nine original songs (Behind the Magic). The musical numbers are ambitious and visually inventive, shifting between live-action fantasy and animation. But scale and movement do not always translate into memorable melodies: several sequences can feel busy, and the songs as a whole leave less of a mark than the film’s visual design or performances.

That weakness is not absolute. Time’s contemporary review found some numbers dazzling but also exhausting, and singled out “A Cover Is Not the Book” and “The Place Where the Lost Things Go” as standouts (Time’s review). That is one critic’s assessment, but it captures the uneven balance between spectacle and song.
Does it live up to the original?
The sequel’s strongest scenes work through affection for the earlier film, revisiting its sense of wonder and the Banks family’s troubles. That familiarity also limits it. The returning nanny, a family in need and a sequence of magical excursions provide a comfortable framework, but the film rarely feels as surprising or singular as the 1964 original. Rotten Tomatoes’ page reflects that disagreement: its critic-review excerpt describes the sequel as familiar but effective, while the user reactions it displays are sharply mixed. Is Mary Poppins Returns worth watching?
Yes, particularly for Blunt’s interpretation, the cast’s chemistry and the film’s most imaginative musical set pieces. Viewers looking for songs as instantly enduring as the original’s, or for a sequel that substantially reinvents the formula, may find it less satisfying. It is an affectionate return with real emotional appeal, even if homage often wins out over originality.

Disney lists Blu-ray and DVD as home-viewing formats (Disney home media page), and the film has an official Disney+ title page. A title page does not guarantee current availability in every country, so check the catalog for your region. The soundtrack is another option for revisiting the songs, though a current physical edition is not established here.
