In a statement reported June 10, 2025, Mary Lou Retton called her conduct “completely unacceptable,” said she made no excuses and apologized to her family, friends and fans. Reports that day said she had entered a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor, non-aggravated DUI charge in West Virginia—not a guilty plea.
What Retton said
West Virginia MetroNews reported Retton’s statement on June 10, 2025:
“What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry. I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.”
The statement was reported by MetroNews; it is not presented here as a first-party transcript.

What happened in the case
- May 17, 2025: Reports said Retton was arrested in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia, and charged with misdemeanor DUI. MetroNews and ABC News reported that she was released after posting a $1,500 bond. MetroNews; ABC News
- June 10, 2025: MetroNews and The Independent reported that she entered a no-contest plea to a non-aggravated DUI charge and made her public statement. The Independent
- June 11, 2025: ABC News reported the plea and quoted Retton’s attorney, Edmund J. Rollo, on the case disposition and fine.
What the no-contest plea and fine mean in the reporting
The reports describe a no-contest plea, not a guilty plea. The Independent reported that Retton received a $100 fine. ABC News attributed to attorney Edmund J. Rollo the statement that the fine was standard for a first-time, non-aggravated offense in that jurisdiction. That characterization is the attorney’s, as reported by ABC; these accounts do not independently analyze West Virginia sentencing law.
Retton’s public profile
Retton won the women’s gymnastics all-around gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, a milestone noted in the coverage. The case reports concern a later event in West Virginia; her athletic achievement does not change the distinction between the reported charge and the reported court disposition.
