That debut introduced Yelena Belova and a team of MCU misfits; Marvel’s later April 2025 trailer campaign made Sentry’s role as a major threat clearer. The film was scheduled to open in UK and US cinemas on 2 May 2025.
When did the first Thunderbolts* trailer come out?
Disney UK announced the teaser and poster debut on 23 September 2024. The announcement framed the film as an irreverent team-up centered on Yelena Belova and identified the returning characters around her. That is the date of the first teaser campaign—not the film’s cinema release date. Disney UK’s announcement listed 2 May 2025 as the UK opening date; Disney’s US film page lists the same date for the film.
Who is in the Thunderbolts team?
Disney’s official US synopsis names six central team members, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine as the person whose death trap ensnares them.
| Character | Performer | Role in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Yelena Belova | Florence Pugh | Center of the team-up described in the first announcement |
| Bucky Barnes | Sebastian Stan | Member of the ensemble |
| Red Guardian | David Harbour | Member of the ensemble |
| John Walker | Wyatt Russell | Member of the ensemble |
| Taskmaster | Olga Kurylenko | Member of the ensemble |
| Ghost | Hannah John-Kamen | Member of the ensemble |
| Valentina Allegra de Fontaine | Julia Louis-Dreyfus | The figure whose death trap catches the group |
Lewis Pullman is also among the performers named on Disney’s film page. Jake Schreier directed the film, and Kevin Feige produced it. The character and cast information above follows Disney’s official US listing and the UK teaser announcement.

What did the first teaser reveal about Sentry?
The September 2024 announcement focused on the ensemble and the film’s irreverent team-up premise; it did not fully explain Sentry or establish him as the central threat. That became explicit in later promotion. In an April 2025 article about a subsequent trailer, Marvel Japan described Sentry as an overwhelming threat casting a dark danger over New York, with the team responding while the Avengers were absent.
That later framing also presented the Thunderbolts as misfits led by Bucky who choose to confront the danger despite doubts rooted in their pasts. The distinction matters: the first teaser introduced the group, while the later trailer campaign clarified the scale and identity of what they would face.
