Marvel Zombies is an animated horror spectacle whose most memorable moments are often stronger than the story connecting them. The four-episode Disney+ series offers gruesome set pieces and Marvel callbacks, but reviewers have also criticized its narrative execution and, in one assessment, its animation style. Whether it is worth watching depends on how much you want horror imagery and familiar heroes—and how much you need a coherent, satisfying story.
What is Marvel Zombies?
Marvel Zombies is a four-episode animated miniseries about survivors trying to end a zombie plague after the Avengers are overtaken. Disney+ lists the series as TV-MA, a rating that makes its animated-superhero format a poor guide to how graphic its horror may be. D23 reported that it premiered on September 24, 2025.
The series is best understood as a compact horror adventure rather than a conventional superhero team-up. Its premise puts recognizable Marvel characters in a world where the familiar power fantasy has been overturned: survival, not victory in a routine battle, is the immediate problem.
How does Marvel Zombies connect to What If…?
The series draws on the zombie story introduced in What If…?, but Marvel has said it is not a direct continuation of that episode’s cliffhanger. D23 described the project as a four-episode “mini-movie event,” which helps set expectations: it is a separate, concentrated story using that animated corner of the Marvel universe, not simply the next episode of What If…?.

Showrunner Bryan Andrews described the ambition to D23 this way: “It’s not just a zombie story, it’s a sweeping adventure — one with themes of hope and despair, and that’s what you want from a rich zombie story.” That aim helps explain why the series reaches beyond shock and gore, even if reviewers differ on how well its broader story lands.
Where the series is most effective: horror imagery and Marvel detail
TechRadar singled out the cinematic quality of the horror set pieces, while GamesRadar praised the Easter eggs and gruesome zombie moments. Taken together, those reviews point to the show’s clearest strength: it knows how to make the collision between superhero iconography and zombie horror visually striking. Familiar characters and symbols become unsettling material rather than just fan-service decoration.

The genre energy also gives the four episodes a strong immediate hook. For viewers who enjoy animated horror, graphic confrontations and spotting references across Marvel stories, the series can deliver moments that are more vivid than a standard superhero action sequence. That is a meaningful appeal, though it does not automatically make the surrounding plot equally compelling.
Why the storytelling can be frustrating
The divide between spectacle and narrative is central to the critical response. TechRadar criticized the wider story and judged the art style mid-tier compared with What If…?. GamesRadar also noted hiccups and suggested the younger heroes’ storyline could have worked better. These are reviewers’ assessments, not an objective consensus, but they identify a recurring risk in a short, crowded franchise story: striking scenes and references may arrive more confidently than character arcs or pacing.

That gap matters because the premise invites more than a sequence of scares. A desperate group of survivors and the collapse of familiar heroic roles can support tension, emotional consequence and hard choices. When the narrative does not make those elements feel as developed as the imagery, the show may seem visually ambitious but dramatically less satisfying. The cited reviews support that critical reading; they do not establish that every viewer will respond the same way.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
The clearest fit is a viewer comfortable with TV-MA animated horror who already recognizes the Marvel ensemble and has some familiarity with What If…?. Familiarity can make its character appearances and references more rewarding. Viewers new to Marvel may still follow the basic zombie-survival premise, but the series’ franchise connections are part of its appeal, so some character significance and callbacks may carry less weight for them.

- Consider skipping it if: TV-MA horror or gruesome zombie scenes are not your preference.
Is Marvel Zombies worth watching?
Marvel Zombies is worth considering as a short horror excursion into Marvel’s animated universe, especially for viewers who value visual invention and genre references. It is a more conditional recommendation for anyone looking for a tightly satisfying story: the reviews praise the horror moments while also flagging weaknesses in the narrative, and TechRadar separately questions the art style against What If…?. The best reason to press play is the collision of Marvel characters with animated zombie horror—not an assurance that every story beat will be as effective as its imagery.
A companion comic, not an adaptation edition
Marvel’s catalog lists a Marvel Zombies trade paperback collecting issues #1–5, written by Robert Kirkman. It is useful companion reading for someone interested in the wider franchise, but it is a comic collection, not a direct tie-in edition or an exact adaptation of the animated series.
