For a first-time viewer, watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films in theatrical release order: that preserves the original character introductions, crossovers, and reveals. For a rewatch organized by when events happen in the story, use Disney+’s MCU Movie Timeline as the practical starting point. The two orders differ, and chronological placements—especially for newer multiverse stories—are not always definitive.
Release order or chronological order: which should you choose?
| Viewing order | What it follows | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theatrical release order | The order audiences first saw the films | First-time viewers who want the original sequence of introductions and reveals | The story jumps between historical periods |
| Chronological story order | The approximate order of events within the MCU story world | Rewatchers and viewers interested in the timeline | Flashbacks, alternate universes, multiverse plots, and timeline revisions complicate a single sequence |
“Chronological” means story events, not the years the films were released. The MCU’s theatrical run began with Iron Man in 2008, but earlier-set stories come first in a timeline watch: Eyes of Wakanda reaches back to 1260 BCE, and Captain America: The First Avenger is set during World War II. See the current GamesRadar MCU guide and Rotten Tomatoes MCU guide for additional editorial timelines.
MCU movies in chronological order
This movie-only list is a practical viewing spine, not a claim that every placement has one universally accepted date. It follows Disney+’s separate movie timeline and current editorial guides; consult the platform’s collection for the latest ordering. Optional series, shorts, and specials are not included.

Where do Eyes of Wakanda and The Fantastic Four: First Steps fit?
Eyes of Wakanda is an animated anthology rather than a movie. Include it only if you want MCU screen stories beyond films; its episodes reach into ancient history and can make a single-title placement misleading. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is an alternate-universe story, so treat it as a separate optional watch rather than inserting it into the main Earth-616 sequence.

Deadpool & Wolverine is also a multiverse entry, and its placement is less straightforward than assigning it to one main-timeline year. Late-film ordering may shift as the timeline is updated; for the current platform sequence, check Disney+’s MCU Movie Timeline.
MCU films in theatrical release order
Release order begins with Iron Man, the MCU’s 2008 theatrical launch—not with its earliest story. The first six films, in the sequence listed by GamesRadar, are:

Not if you want a movie-only watch. Disney+ distinguishes the MCU Movie Timeline from the MCU Complete Timeline, which includes films and series broken out by season. Series can cover different periods or require season-level placement, so use the complete timeline when you want the broader screen-story sequence rather than inserting whole shows into a movie list.

Disney+ hosts these timeline collections, but availability of individual titles can vary by country; the existence of a collection is not a guarantee that every film is available in every regional catalog. Spider-Man distribution and streaming availability can also differ from Disney-owned titles.
