Gwenpool is Gwen Poole, a comic-book reader from a world where Marvel’s heroes were fictional—until she found herself among them. Her unusual perspective gives her a way to interact with comic-book storytelling, but it doesn’t make her an all-powerful fighter. Here are ten facts that explain who she is, how she got her name, and what makes her stories distinctive.
Who is Gwenpool?
- She came from a world where Marvel heroes were fictional. Gwen was obsessed with superheroes in another universe, where their lives appeared in comic books. She later arrived in the Marvel Universe, where those characters are real. Marvel’s character profile summarizes that origin.
- She knew the lore better than she knew how to fight. Gwen’s reading gave her extensive knowledge of heroes and villains, but Marvel says she initially had little talent or practical skill. Knowing a character’s history is not the same as being able to handle a fight.
- “Gwenpool” was a costume-order mix-up. Gwen requested a white masked costume. A handwriting error turned that request into the name “Gwenpool,” which she adopted.
What can Gwenpool do?
- She can use the space between comic panels. Marvel describes Gwen pulling antagonists into the gutter—the blank space between panels. This is a story-medium ability, not simply a claim that she can defeat anyone or control every event.
- She has talked to other versions of herself on the same page. Marvel’s profile describes Gwen addressing different incarnations of herself in different parts of a page. The comics make the page layout part of the action.
Who are the people around her?
- Batroc the Leaper became her combat mentor. He taught Gwen rudimentary use of firearms, swords, katanas, and other weapons. Marvel also describes him as a father figure to her.
- Her hacker friend Cecil died because of her—and returned as a ghost. Marvel’s profile says Gwen caused Cecil’s death and that he came back as a ghost, a sharp example of the consequences that can follow her choices.
- MODOK’s organization went from employer to her responsibility. Gwen joined the mercenary group associated with MODOK and, after his defeat, eventually became its new leader.
When did Gwenpool’s first solo series begin?
- The Unbelievable Gwenpool began in 2016. Marvel dates issue #1 to April 13, 2016. The issue credits Christopher Hastings as writer and Danilo S. Beyruth and Gurihiru as pencillers. Marvel’s issue page introduces Gwen as a comic reader who wakes in a world where the characters she read about seem real. The series page labels the run 2016–2018 and lists issues through #25: The Unbelievable Gwenpool (2016–2018).
- The original 25-issue run is available in a large omnibus collection. Marvel lists a 1,340-page trade paperback, published December 21, 2022. It collects The Unbelievable Gwenpool #1–25 along with related stories and appearances, including issues of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, Champions, West Coast Avengers, and Gwenpool Strikes Back. See Marvel’s Gwenpool Omnibus listing for the full contents. The listing establishes what the edition collects, not whether it is currently in stock at a particular retailer.
Why Gwenpool is more than a fourth-wall gag
Gwen begins with the unsettling advantage of believing the people around her are fictional characters. Her comic knowledge and ability to interact with the page make that premise visible, but they do not erase the human stakes. Marvel’s profile says she has grown to care for the people in her adopted universe even as she continues to believe she is a character in a comic book. That tension—between treating a world as a story and recognizing the people living in it—is central to her appeal.
Gwen Poole is not Gwen Stacy, and the name “Gwenpool” alone does not make her a version of Deadpool. Her identity and origin are distinct: she is a reader from another universe who became part of the Marvel setting.
