Why January 30 is India’s Martyrs’ Day
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, at Old Birla House in New Delhi. The Ministry of Culture identifies Nathuram Godse as the assassin. Old Birla House is now Gandhi Smriti, a memorial to Gandhi’s life and work. Ministry of Culture: Mahatma Gandhi; Gandhi Smriti.
Gandhi Smriti records that Gandhi lived at Old Birla House from September 9, 1947, until January 30, 1948. India’s observance extends beyond remembering Gandhi: it pays tribute to freedom fighters and martyrs more broadly. Gandhi Smriti; Akashvani News.
Can these Gandhi quotes be verified?
No verbatim quotation was established from the primary-source material available for this article, so it would be misleading to present a list of popular sayings as authenticated. A phrase appearing repeatedly online—or on a quote graphic—is not proof that Gandhi said or wrote it. A reliable attribution should point to a primary text, speech, letter, or other record and preserve enough surrounding context to show what Gandhi meant.

Where to check Gandhi’s own words
The Gandhi Heritage Portal describes itself as a repository of authentic information on Gandhi and lists his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, among its resources. It is a useful starting point for checking a quotation against Gandhi’s writings. When a saying is attributed to him, look for a traceable passage in a primary source rather than relying on a modern collection that provides no citations.

On January 30, 2026, Akashvani News reported a Sarva-Dharma Prarthana at Gandhi Samadhi, Rajghat, alongside tributes by the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister. Its report called the occasion Gandhi’s 78th death anniversary. Akashvani News, January 30, 2026.
