Martin Sheen, the actor who played fictional President Jed Bartlet on The West Wing, shook hands with President Joe Biden at the White House on August 15, 2024, as Biden headed to his helicopter. A later account also described a private Oval Office exchange between the two; that was separate from the widely documented departure greeting.
What happened on August 15?
A White House pool report noted Sheen’s presence as Biden departed and said the president shook hands with him before walking to his helicopter. Axios also described Sheen greeting Biden outside the White House that day. The pool report documents the handshake; it does not quote either man speaking during it. White House pool report · Axios
The moment drew an obvious comparison between real and fictional presidents: Sheen played President Jed Bartlet on The West Wing, while Biden was the sitting president. The two offices are not interchangeable—Bartlet was a character Sheen portrayed on television.
What was said in the Oval Office?
In an account published August 21, Washingtonian reported that Sheen also met Biden in the Oval Office during the visit. Sheen recalled: “He addressed me as ‘Mr. President’ and I was literally tongue tied.” Washingtonian also reported that Biden told him, “You didn’t tell me how hard this job was,” and Sheen answered, “Well, what do I know. I just did it on TV.” These remarks come from Washingtonian’s account of the visit, not the contemporaneous pool report of the handshake. Washingtonian’s account

Washingtonian said the visit was partly an occasion for Sheen to deliver copies of What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, written by former cast members Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack.
How was this different from the show’s 25th-anniversary event?
The handshake was not part of the cast’s later anniversary celebration. On September 20, 2024, First Lady Jill Biden hosted The West Wing cast in the White House Rose Garden to mark the show’s 25th anniversary. President Biden was in Delaware hosting leaders from Australia, India, and Japan, so he was not at the event. American Presidency Project reproduction of the first lady’s reportable background
